Finding The Perfect Gown

Daisy Chose a Simple Spaghetti Strap Dress Over a Princess Ball Gown!

By  |

Every girl has pictures of their dream wedding gown elaborately drawn in her mind. Daisy Alepo‘s dream was a princess ball gown with a cathedral veil, and if you had told her months prior to her wedding that her choice would be completely different, she wouldn’t have believed you. She tells Satisfashion UG Weddings how she ended up walking down the aisle in a simple spaghetti strap dress.

Bride: Daisy Alepo

Wedding date: 1st November 2020

Choosing my husband’s outfit was both easy and difficult. Difficult in a sense that he’s a perfectionist! When he wants something in a certain way, that’s usually it for him. He doesn’t go and back and forth about it. I greatly leveraged on Pinterest for ideas for his suit and when he saw something he liked among what I shared, he said he wanted it exactly like that. So, we tried to go around town to check for a readymade one as we had just one and a half weeks to the wedding at the time, and didn’t think tailoring was an option.

Nevertheless, we ended up tailoring it at Home of Gents. I was initially worried and anxious about his expectations being met but I’m glad they were, and we didn’t have any major issues surrounding the tailoring process.

For my gown, I was always inspired by the idea of a simple yet elegant royal-princess feel. Growing up, I always knew I would rock a princess ball gown with a cathedral veil. Only to go for gown fittings in one of the renowned bridal boutiques in Kampala and realising that the ball gown was not made for me.

I felt so swallowed up in the gowns I tried because of my body size, it was so uncomfortable wearing the loop skirt underneath every single dress – even the mermaid gowns that I thought would work for me didn’t. It was exhausting having that much weight to carry around for an entire day.

So, I was already sad from just thinking about the weight of the dresses and comfort was key for me. I had to turn to my plan B – a beautiful spaghetti strap dress that had been embedded in my subconscious for years, yet I didn’t realize until the day I chose it.

I took a chance and asked Maria of BYOL – Be Your Own Label to work on it. I had other major brands in mind that I’d reached out to but then my heart settled with Maria despite having known her for only 2 months at the time. Prior to asking her, I’d checked her work on Instagram and I had this gut feeling I could trust her to deliver.

Initially, I made the inquiry seem like it was for someone else but I later told her it was mine. She was over the roof excited and couldn’t believe I wanted such a simple dress for a wedding dress. Fast forward, she outdid herself. Working with Maria was so effortless….she was always on time! Words can’t explain but she truly made my day. I’m glad I chose to tailor my gown because I had the space to customize it and make it the lovely dress I enjoyed myself in.

For the entourage, uniqueness was a thing I asked them to portray in their outfits. Good enough, my sister, who is also the Head of Creatives at Tenge, was part of the team, so that was a burden she carried on my behalf – making sure everything added up because handling such a big bridal team can be real work. They used different shades of rose because that was our theme “Shades of roses”.

Same thing applied to the groomsmen. I’m really happy everything fell into place at the end of the day because color coordination was something I worried about considering we organised everything in just 2 weeks!
