“Our Family Didn’t Approve Of Our Relationship at The Beginning” – Zari On How She Met Shakib

By  |

The mystery of how Shakib Lutaaya and Zari met lingers on, but not so much anymore! In an interview with Faridah Nakazibwe of Mwasuze Mutya this morning, the socialite shared some details on how she met her 31-year-old husband. Satisfashion UG Weddings captured it all in text, for your consumption **.

Shakib and I first met briefly sometime before the lockdown. This was 2019, to be exact. We met in Pretoria because at the time he lived in South Africa. There was, however, so much pressure from my family – they did not approve of the relationship because of our age difference. It fizzled!

After the lockdown, we met again, but this time I chose to keep it away from my family. We began dating because the feeling was mutual. The relationship was not public until someone who was my friend at the time leaked a video of us in Cape town. Once that happened, it dawned on us that we aren’t doing anything wrong, and we were both single. So, we went public about it.

The reaction when the video leaked was as expected; the public was irked by how young he was. This is something both of us were aware of. It wasn’t an issue to me because I always rebel against standards set by society. It’s always weird when older women date young men but when roles are reversed it’s okay so society. Such hypocrisy! It’s the 21st century and things are different now.

Considering how well he and I interacted, some of my family members approved. But, of course, others didn’t, and that’s okay.

Nikah

The whole Nikkah thing caught me off guard! It began with him asking me about Muslim clerics in South Africa. My incessant probing on why he wanted a cleric received no response so, I moved on. He then reached out to a friend for the same, this time without letting me know.

Two days later, he told me that his plans for us to wed in Muslim weddings were done. I was surprised. “Have you thought about this?” I asked. At that moment I was overwhelmed with how fast the events were unfolding. When we woke up the next morning, we went shopping for the ceremony attire. I called up a few friends and family, who, by the way, had no idea it was a Nikkah. Just like that, we got married.

I didn’t feel hijacked because I knew this was someone that cared for and adored me. On my Nikkah I asked for a Quran because I’m more spiritual now. It wasn’t out of pity for him, I just wanted to settle and that was enough for me.

Our wedding is scheduled to hold in Uganda this December if it doesn’t happen then the first quarter of next year. We don’t plan to have a big wedding because I’ve done all the big flashy things already. All I want is a simple intimate event.
