Motorola, now under the umbrella of Lenovo, is once again making waves in the tech world with its latest innovation.

Last year, the U.S. mobile giant showcased its prowess in flexible screens with the unveiling of the Rizr phone at the 2023 Mobile World Congress (MWC). However, innovation doesn’t always guarantee success.

Enter the bracelet phone, initially unveiled at Lenovo’s Tech World in October and recently showcased at MWC in Barcelona. The concept is intriguing: wear your phone on your wrist for hands-free convenience while still having access to part of your screen.

Unlike traditional bracelet phones, Motorola’s device doesn’t transform into a bracelet itself. Instead, it utilizes Motorola’s technology to curve into a clamp shape, magnetically attaching to a sleek Milanese mesh bracelet for secure placement on the arm.

This innovation posed significant challenges for Motorola. With curved batteries currently impossible to produce, the phone incorporates multiple small batteries aligned on the back of the screen. Additionally, comfort was a priority, leading to the use of fabric on the phone’s back, albeit at the cost of aesthetic appeal.

Despite being a prototype, the smartphone-bracelet concept raises questions. Digital journalists have noted its considerable weight and rigid hinges, hindering ease of use.

However, it’s not all negative. Journalists from Presse Citron, present at MWC, commend the software innovations designed to complement the flexible screen. Features like transitioning from a large screen to a smaller one when curved around the wrist, or displaying two mini screens when folded in half for face-to-face gaming, showcase the potential of this technology for future Motorola devices.

While challenges remain, there’s hope for a future where smartphones seamlessly transform into bracelets, providing users with continuous access to their digital lives, even when not in active use.
