Meet ‘Moo’ The Ugandan-rooted Sustainable Accessory Brand That is Revamping Cow Horns

By  |

MOO is a Ugandan-rooted accessory brand that is committed to environmental sustainability

According to the brand’s official site, MOO. stemmed from a realization that they were placing worth in all the wrong people and places. They had a moment to look inward and truly discover who they were outside of someone or something else. It was then that they self-discovery led me back to my African roots. Back to my identity. They rediscovered my passion and interest for artisanship within the African continent. The vibrancy and uniqueness of each and every piece. It was in this moment that they realized that they could also create a sense of self-worth and empowerment among my people and throughout the continent.

With a simple IG search for African artisans, they were connected to the founders of Artisan Global, Devon, and Lauren, whose appetite for artisans, creativity, and self-realization matched their own. They began teaching them about their organization and certain resources that artisans use there. Through multiple conversations, the ankle cow horn was brought up. They immediately envisioned a bag made entirely of the horn to symbolize the precious animal and to represent the uniqueness of the Ugandan culture. The birth of MOO began…

The bags which are made from raw cow horns are collected around abattoirs in rural and urban areas. The horn is shaped into a distinct MOO bag by the removal of the horn’s inner muscle and the heating of the horn pieces into their desired shape and the vegan leather and closures are all sourced from local Ugandan leather and craft shops.
