Backstory

Hunter’s story

We met at work. At the beginning, our relationship was strictly professional. We were working on an event, on which I was the show executive producer. Phiona came in as the show director/kids model coach on the project. Our love for kids and the passion for their talents gradually played a huge role in bringing us together. It wasn’t long until we realised, we had a lot in common. The rest is now history. She’s, indeed, my better half; a great companion, a wonderful mum, and a reliable business partner, what else could a man ask for?

Phiona’s story

Hunter hired me to handle production for an exciting kids’ show called Kampala Fashion Show. I was blown away by his professionalism and immense love for children. After the event, we kept in touch. Soon, we were good friends and the story unfolded from there. Truth is, he is such a visionary, something I greatly admired.

Engagement

Hunter

It wasn’t hard for me to realise that Phiona is the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with. First, I introduced her to my friends and family. She too introduced me to her friends and siblings. This was followed by a proposition to formally meet her parents. My parents wrote to hers, a date was greed on and we held our visit to her parents called Kukyala.

I can’t begin to describe how magical it was when his family and friends welcomed me with love. Initially, I didn’t believe when he intimated to me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. However, it was the easiest YES I’ve ever had to say. We later set dates for a formal visit to my parents. That afternoon, when I watched in the window as he and his entourage arrived in our family compound, is when it finally hit me that I was getting married to the man of my dreams.

What drew them together

Hunter

First, I would say destiny. Besides love, her personal character, and the fact that we had passion for the same things, we both had the same aspirations. This made it so easy for us to get along.

Phiona

Hunter is different. He is an honest man, one who will keep his word no matter what. Right from the start, he made it known to me that true love exists. That aside, he is a very hardworking gentleman, who loves and cares for his family deeply. I believe every woman desires a man like Hunter.

The Kukyala

Hunter

I would describe the experience as an adventure.  I’m a Muganda and she’s a Munyankole, there was a mix of cultures. We had to embrace her Ankole traditions without compromising our own. From having to find someone who spoke both languages, to finding all the things that are required to hold a wedding in her culture. It was a hybrid function (Kukyala/Kugamba obugenyi). There was a lot to learn for me. However, generally, it was such a memorable experience. It was great getting myself immersed in her family traditions and people.

It was an amazing experience I must say. I promised myself to be happy throughout the event and it happened. Watching his parents and mine mingling freely as they discussed dates for our traditional wedding was my highlight of the day. Because they are Baganda and we are Banyankole, it was a magical moment seeing them interacting freely. In my culture, to seek a woman’s hand in marriage, the man visits the woman’s parents, while in Buganda he visits her aunt (Senga). He brave it all and visited my parents, It was a beautiful experience.
