Happy International Women’s month. For our Woman Crush Wednesday post today, we’re celebrating the power of sisterhood, and the amazing things that can happen when women come together to support each other. A sisterhood is a social, ethical, and emotional pact between women. It’s based on an understanding that together women are stronger than if they are individuals. Truth is no one understands the adversities women go through in workplaces, homes and everywhere else more than women themselves.
Last year we witnessed the power of sisterhood when a group of former Miss Uganda title winners came together under the Miss Uganda Foundation to form what they called the ‘The Academy of Queens’. The tightly knit pact, (for obvious reasons because not many women are ex-Miss Uganda winners) had just one goal – to groom and mentor the new Miss Uganda title winner.
Phionah Bizzu, a beauty maven who performed excellently well at Miss World 2012 brought her experience to the table. Leah Kalanguka, an entrepreneur and budding fashion designer didn’t hold back on her wealth of experience in fashion. Ellah Nantumbwe, who has literally done it all, from TV to Big Brother and now a business woman, reportedly facilitated the winner’s travel costs to China for the finale. Leah Kagasa was with all the contestants offering advice and mentorship during the competition. Sylvia Namutebi Alibhai under Talent Africa as Project coordinator oversaw the business side of the pageant, while Zahara Nakiyaga, was hugely involved as well.
Fact is, any time women come together with a collective intention, the result is always a powerful thing. Miss Uganda 2018 Quiin Abenakyo was crowned Miss World Africa at Miss World in Sanya, China just months later. That’s just one of the many vivid examples of what women can do when they come together.
Starting this month, you and your girlfriends should come together for just one positive goal. Make an effort to see to it that you reach it, then you can jump onto more causes together. You’ll be amazed at how much this sisterhood will impact not just each of you, but also everyone around you.
We’re hugely opposed to the idea that women should only be celebrated once a month. That’s why a lot of our content, put out every day of the year is tailored to empower, celebrate and uplift women.
We’re crushing on you all. We love you!
