Wunmi Mosaku exudes ancestral power. As she steps into the light with her Oscar-nominated role as Annie in Ryan Coogler’s history-making Sinners, the actress opens up to Glamour’s Head of Editorial Content @kemstagramx about faith, ancestry, motherhood, and the role that changed everything. “This is the moment that I have worked 20 years towards.”
“Love yourself or hurt yourself,” says Wunmi Mosaku, describing how, “When I was a kid, I did affirmations, telling [parts of] myself from the age of 12, ‘I love your hair, I love your skin, I love you stretch marks.’” As someone whose body of work has shown the beauty and power of ordinary women, it’s clear how this strong sense of self-acceptance has grounded her and spoken her success into reality.
For Sinners director Ryan Coogler, Mosaku was a reminder of the women who had supported and loved him throughout his life, with the role of Annie written especially for her.
