Rich Mnisi Unveils ‘MIHLOTI (Tears)’: An AW ’25 Collection Inspired by the Spectrum of Human Emotion

By  |

Continuing our explorations of tension and multiplicity, Mihloti (Tears), utilises intimacy and irony to articulate the complexity of being and becoming. Tears, with their ability to convey a spectrum of emotions ranging from joy and anguish to vulnerability and acceptance, serve as a metaphor for the multifaceted human experience.

Drawing inspiration from the diverse nature of tears, Mihloti delves into the performance of identity and the perpetual process of self-discovery. “I grew up watching my mother and father getting ready for work, wearing these argyle printed pullovers, suits, ties, readying to take over the world. And then I’d turn to the TV and see a clown on screen adorned in the same fashions. And it made me think about how we choose roles and perform self. And how this can be rewarding, humiliating, challenging, exhilarating, and limiting all at the same time.” Mnisi reflects.

From meticulously tailored suits reminiscent of corporate attire to whimsical patterns and exaggerated silhouettes, Mihloti embraces the multiplicity of human expression. Each garment serves as a medium for individuals to weave their own narratives, navigating the intricate layers of identity with every stitch and seam. Adopting a Pierrot-esque approach to expression and performance, Mihloti acknowledges the fluidity of being, with expressions shifting across a broad spectrum. Through its fusion of playfulness and refinement, Mihloti revels in the paradoxes inherent in the journey of self-discovery and transformation.
