Mistaken Fabrics is the new collection by IGC Fashion, that is looking to fast fashion and reworking it to make for more sustainable pieces for the longer run. The problem of fast fashion is one the world is looking at, and Uganda is one of the places where discarded clothes are taken to be resold, which gives a false sense of flow, when they either way end up in landfills. In this new collection, IGC gives a look into the dystopian future for the earth which ignores this problem, while putting some of the problematic clothing to use.
The outfits in this collection are a sort of collage of different fabrics, mixing some of the soon to be discarded clothes with kitenge and bark cloth. The silhouettes were derived from cultural symbols like arrows, shields and architecture. While the focus can be on the clothing, I cannot bear to ignore the accessories used, that bring out the essence of this “post-apocalyptic” theme going on. Gas masks, intimidating horned masks, visors and helmets bring out the dire situation we’d be in.
This collection is a strong statement, made with strong pieces. Some of the hooded pieces look like they belong in a version of Arrow, with their Robin Hood, anti-hero vibe.
