Nancy Kacungira, The Ugandan Journalist Breaking Through Glass Ceilings

By  |

Nancy Kacungira is a name you must have heard around, as she is such a positive influence on youth and women in Uganda and world wide. If you don’t know her, we welcome you from the rock you were living under, but also allow us to reintroduce her.

Nancy just announced that she’d be part of the team doing live bulletins on BBC News. She had prior been handling Focus on Africa, a segment about the businesses that are making a difference on the African continent. But she hadn’t started there. Nancy started her media journey part timing on Power FM here in Uganda while finishing her first degree from Makerere. The Tanzanian born Ugandan lady then moved on to NTV where she was a news anchor for a little over a year, before being snatched up by KTN News Kenya in 2013 as a social media editor. While there she decided to enter the BBC Komla Dumor Award, and much to her surprise, won!

Her journey with the BBC started there as she got the necessary training, and started hosting Focus on Africa as well as the World Business Report. Of course she isn’t just a journalist, having made impactful speeches on stages like TedX and World Economic Forum.

Adding to her Komla Dumor Award, she got the Women for Africa Award in 2016 as well, which was the same year she got to moderate the Ugandan presidential debate. Her passion for Africa and insistence on how our stories should be told catapulted her to one of the biggest global platforms, and inspired countless others to reach for greatness.
