How To Style The Fashion Week Outfit (Of My Dreams!)

By  |

As last year there was no Kampala Fashion Week because of the pesky pandemic, this year round isn’t looking any better. The second wave is hitting quite hard and even wishing for this seems like a long shot, but bear with me here. Let’s sit back and imagine better days, moments where at this point you would realistically be looking forward to one of fashion’s biggest weekends, shall we?

Well you would need a stylish look, isn’t it? Here are some foolproof tips to making sure you’re the talk of the town.

Shades

You’re a cool girl and not anyone should see what you’re thinking about the clothes moving past you as you station yourself front row to get the best view. Shades, which come in all shapes and sizes, can turn a Plain Jane into a celebrity lookalike. Just make sure not to stumble!

Mixed Prints

It’s all about the unexpected moments, so I’d say adding cow print to zebra print – or polka dots to checkered print, is a good direction to head by. It will turn heads, and if done properly, the comments that follow will be peppered with a little envy.

Statement Piece

Whether it is a long coat, a bright maxi skirt or some futuristic jewelry, a statement piece is there to show just who you are. At a place where the expression of fashion is being celebrated, it’s the best time to pull out that funky hat that most makes you feel like… well, you.

Colourful Accessories

Black shoes and bag may be good for the office, but if you want to show up positively on fashion police pages, go for colour. We already talk about colour in this post about post pandemic trends to look out for, but here’s a great way to do it unexpectedly. Hey, if black is what it’s going to take to bring your outfit to life, then so be it, but a bright pink or green moment is what is at heart.

Keep it Comfy

Fashion is about expressing yourself, and essentially should be as comfortable as wearing a second skin. Wearing something that fits you well and is movable brings about not just a put together look, but also the vibe that you woke up like this. Only you need to know what you went through to look like that. Granted, for some of us, high heels are our happy place, and if it is, it will show! Don’t pull out the 5 inch stilettos only to stumble your way through the cocktail area. C’est tragique!

Confidence

All the above means nothing if you don’t have the confidence to rock it. You could have the illest outfit, but if you are constantly playing with your hems and adjusting your sleeves then you come across not only as someone who isn’t sure of their fabulosity (and if you’re not sure, honestly why should anyone else be?), but also clumsy and not one to watch. Remember Lady Gaga’s meat dress? If she wasn’t confident the execution of that look would have been awkward, and a flop. Don’t let your fire fit down!

All this is just my wishful thinking that this September there might be a Fashion Week to attend; but at least there’ll be many virtual ones around the world – who knows? I might just attend those instead!
