So originally, I had planned to do a detachable wedding dress; one that is a ball gown and fitting at the same time. I had picked out all these beautiful ideas last year, and had actually met a tailor who could do that dress for me. Like in early January, because originally the wedding was supposed to be in June but when the whole COVID incidence happened in March, I later dropped the idea.
Actually, that month, in March, I went to one of the bridal shops here in Kampala. I wanted to try out one some of the gowns, both fitting and ball gown, but I was really into the idea of a fitting gown. We got to this bridal shop, they seemed to be nice people, and I tried on fitting dresses first, then the ball gowns. I just fell in love with the ball gowns! They were so gorgeous! I fell in love with one particular dress, and thought it was the one. I tried to keep in touch with the person from the bridal shop, but somehow they blue-ticked me, they didn’t respond to me. I told myself, you know what Alice, I’m not going to push for this if it’s not meant to be, because I was trying to communicate with the person but they are not communicating back. I had kept tabs with them, informed them the wedding had been pushed from June to September, asked if I could go back for an appointment but they didn’t respond.
One of my childhood friends had gotten married sometime last year, and she really had on a beautiful gown. I asked her where she got it from and that’s when I was recommended to go to Penny Bold Bridals. I had seen some of their pictures online and their gowns really looked beautiful, so I went there. I went with 3 of my girlfriends and I told them I was interested in a ball gown. I guess it’s because the first time I put on a gown, the whole ‘Cinderella’ vibe came upon me, and my parents told me I used to watch Cinderella almost every day, it was my favourite cartoon, and the Cinderella in me was like, YES! I’m going to do a ball gown.
As I tried on gowns, I told them I’d love to try both kinds. We started with the ballgowns first and they were all gorgeous, but I hadn’t yet felt that any of them were the one yet. I was giving them feedback on each gown and they did their best to bring out a gown that was better than the one I had worn before. So Penny is like, “I think I know what you want” so they bring out the gown. At first I was a bit skeptical because usually when I see people wearing a gown with illusion, it tends not to work with their skin complexion, so I was kind of hesitant to try it on but it was beautiful. And in my mind I thought I was going to put on an off shoulder ballgown. I tried it on, the illusion is exactly like my skin tone, everything was so beautiful, so gorgeous, I was like Yes! this is the dress! It’s interesting how the last dress that I tried on was the one that was working so perfectly for me. Already I had picked out the bridesmaids dresses, and they had the 3D Detail flowers so this ball gown also had the 3D detail flowers I was like ‘Yes, yes, yes! This is going to be perfect for me and my girls’ I felt so beautiful in that gown. That’s how I chose my gown.
For the changing dress, I wanted to put on a mermaid fitting gown. I then went ahead and met up with Tina Brad. Already we had had an encounter for the kwanjula, she is the one who provided me with the shoes, and she was such a darling, the customer service was so great. So I told her I was going over to try on the dresses, I wanted either gold or white fitting dress. My heart was set on a white one, so she pulls out all these dresses, and I try on the gold ones, they were really looking pretty. She pulled out one of the white ones, and she wasn’t sure if I would like it. It was the last dress that I tried on at her boutique and it was perfect. I knew it was my changing dress, I didn’t even bother her to go through more dresses.
So that’s how I ended up with my 2 gorgeous dresses. They were beautiful and really made me enjoy the day. I think even 10 or 20 years from now I would redo those dresses without any doubt about that. I felt like a queen and felt so lovely. Both Penny Bold and Tina Brad had excellent customer service, I felt like they truly listened to what I wanted and they would provide. So my experience was good.
