Did You Pimp Your Wardrobe When You Had A Chance?

By  |

Nu Wardrobe Uganda came back to your closets with another fashion forward event dubbed “Pimp Your Wardrobe”

The first Nu Wardrobe event was a Swap Shop, ran in collaboration with The Hanger. The Swap Shop was held in The Bistro, Kisementi, where people bring 1 – 10 items of clothes that they no longer wore, but were in good condition, to be swapped for no-longer-loved clothes of other attendees. It was a great way for people to attend a fun event, bring old clothes, and go home with new items for them to love and wear, this event gave a new life to over 400 items!

This time, Pimp your Wardrobe created a space for people to take items of clothes or jewellery that they may be losing love for, don’t fit right anymore, are broken, or have rips or stains in them, for their designer Recho to help re-design, re-imagine, upstyle, and detail, giving an update to items of their closet for free, and teaching new skills. They also had Taloso Workshop, the talented jewellery makers, in attendance with all of their beautiful beads, skills and creativity in mending and creating jewellery, and giving a new life to old jewellery that people brought. Everyone who came upstyled items of their closet using the skills that Recho gave to them and using the left over cloth from the swap shop. Beloved earrings that had been broken were fixed, and new pieces of jewellery were created.

The Nu Wardrobe is a community-centred online platform to share clothes with friends and other Nu members. It allows members to post pictures and information of clothes that they have in their wardrobe but don’t wear often enough, for others in the area to borrow for a decided amount of time, creating access to a constantly changing wardrobe and access to fashion without having to purchase.

It was started by women in Ireland that love fashion but know that the fashion industry has devastating impacts for the environment and for the people making the clothes in dangerous conditions in warehouses. To promote sustainable fashion and the Nu Wardrobe name, Nu Wardrobe Brand Ambassadors run events such as swap shops, upstyling events, screenings of documentaries about the negative impacts of the fast fashion industry to raise awareness. Their are brand ambassadors all over Ireland and England, and now Uganda!
