Art exhibition to focus on environmental conservation

By  |

Afrika Arts kollective under its project Garbage collectors has brought together a group of Ugandan artists to help clean up the city. The garbage collectors’ project seeks to leverage art as a solution to real world issues, in this instance waste disposal and environmental conservation.

Artists are going to engage with communities to teach them and help them clean up their environment. Garbage collection points have been established where people can deliver their rubbish. These include supermarkets, bars and religious centers. The 5 artists have arranged for this raw material to be taken to their workshops.

This process will culminate in an art exhibit on March 28th at the Uganda museum from 10am to 10pm. At the exhibit, the artists will show case the pieces of art they have crafted with what was formerly rubbish. This will be followed by an exhibition tour in community spaces, art galleries and Universities between the 29th of March and 30th of April from 10am to 5pm.

The vision is to engage and challenge people to think beyond the ordinary and find new ways to conserve the environment. We also seek to position artists as agents of change and hope to have more artists joining the project.

Artists on board include Bruno Ruganzu, Ronex A, Sandra Suubi, Xenson and Nabukenya Hellen. Each shall be working with a particular  material that features as rubbish on most of our roads sides. This will include; polythene, paper, plastic, beer cans and cloth.
