How Fred and Julie Held a Fabulous Kwanjula on a Budget!

By  |

Fredrick Kisitu and Juliet Nakalanzi, both entrepreneurs and born-again Christians met in church. They dated for six years before holding their Kwanjula (traditional wedding) last year in December.

Engagement

It was beautiful. He proposed to me at Latitude 0′ on Boxing Day. He planned with my matron and friends to surprise me. I knew he would propose but I didn’t know when, so he caught me off guard.

Planning

My service providers were all my friends so they made it easy for us to plan. We began with a kukyala which was done at my Senga’s home. It was simple and small with about 10 people in attendance because my husband and I had to work around our small budget.

We had few challenges because my husband and I planned this event with help from friends and family. And with prayers too. I was the source of all the ideas so I didn’t o a lot of consultations, just my close friends because I didn’t want disappointments. I planned everything and reached out to service providers on my own. Good thing, we planned early so a week to the function everything was set.

The event

The event was held at my grandparents’ place in Kitebi because space at home couldn’t accommodate everyone. We planned for 200 guests inclusive of 60 from the groom’s side and we were very strict on numbers. Also because we held no meetings people weren’t in the know therefore numbers were easy to manage.

We had no entertainment because it wasn’t within our budget but our Deejay and spokesmen did a good job.

The Décor

A friend of mine did it. Décor by Aie. I wanted something very unique and beautiful that would wow the guests. So our theme colours were Mint green and white. The gazebo was my best part. It really wowed me too. It was super big and spacious, beautiful and uniquely done.

Outfits

I got them from friends I work with Didi bridals and Mimi bridals. I chose the Gomesi and colours. I wanted something really beautiful and simple without me trying so hard to please people. I hired my outfits because I saw no reason in purchasing outfits I wouldn’t wear again and also because it’s what was within my budget.

Fred dressed himself too.

The Wow moments

My outfits and the gazebo. I also wowed the guests like I planned. Most people didn’t know what to expect since we planned the event ourselves and held no meetings.

Cake

Our Cake was baked by Esther of Sheeba’s palace. I chose lemon because it is my mum’s best flavour. When I did cake tasting I also took for her at home to taste and help me make a decision.

Advice to future grooms/brides

To only pray and believe in God. He never disappoints. His glory will surely show if you trust him. Trust and support your partner because you are a team and avoid straining.
