Youtuber Cissy Nansera Went Backpacking Alone in India

There’s just something about fearless women that never stops boggling our minds. What does fear mean to them, and how can we be just as badass as they are?

In this series, we talk to a few of women who looked fear in the eye, and made some really bold and pivotal decisions in their lives.

Meet Cissy Nansera, an ethereal yogi and YouTuber, let’s find out what fearlessness means to her.

What is the most fearless decision you have ever made?

To go backpacking in India; in 2018 I knew I was ready to share the beautiful practice of yoga with the rest of the world but in order to do that, I needed to first commit to 200 hours of teacher training and I thought, what better place to learn than in the world yoga capital, which so happens to be Rishikesh, India in the Himalayan ranges. As one does, I shared my thought with friends and family, yes they were supportive but not before they scared the living Jesus out of me. “India has the highest rape rates around the world, they hate black people, it’s not safe, why would a young girl like you want to travel alone?” This didn’t stop me. Yes I was so scared but I had my mind set on this so nothing was going to stop me, especially not fear.

What is your definition of Fearless?

Fearlessness to me is being afraid of something but still mustering the courage to face and have a go at it. It’s bravery!

Who are your most fierce/fearless role models?

My mum: Her selflessness and kind heart are everything! I hope to be half the mother she is one day.

Michelle Obama: a NOT angry black woman who doesn’t let the white world shutter her dreams. After reading her ‘Becoming’, all the hesitation for reaching the stars was flushed out of my system, now I’m hella unstoppable.

Her royal highness Sylvia Nagginda: such a beautiful, elegant queen, so modern yet so deep rooted in her culture. Growing up, I didn’t like cooking my cultural food until I heard about her Kisakate. I remember my mom telling me, “Look at how gorgeous she is, has one of the best closets, gotten a good education abroad yet not throwing away her sense of belonging and by the way you look like her.” Since then, no matter where I go or how cool I come off, deep down I’m a proud Muganda, all thanks to the queen.
