31 Days of Ugandan Fashion: Stella Atal, The Painter and Queen of ‘Wearable Art’

By  |

Welcome to August! During this month we’re sharing a special spotlight onto 31 Ugandan design brands the world needs to know. Check back every day for a new post.

Stella Atal

Based in Paris, Stella Atal is a professional artist, painter and ‘self-taught fashion designer’. She describes her designs as ‘wearable art’. And indeed it is. Atal uses her heritage to tell the African story through art and fashion. Every piece from her collection is celebratory not just of the African body alone, but also her heritage. She has been in this business for over 10 years, and lately she juggles her work as a designer with connecting young up and coming creatives to the rest of the world.

According to her, inspiration for her designs is derived from fabrics and situations around her. “I create the outfit but what completes it is the painting which demonstrates the situation or my feelings,”  she told The Observer in an interview.

The more she looks at fabric and different patterns, the more ideas spring into her head.
