Initially We Weren’t Excited About Having a Scientific Event, but We Actually Had The Wedding Of Our Dreams!

By  |

Meet Victor and Maldrine. They met after a church prayer meeting. We run their engagement story last weekend. If you missed the post, see it here.

Here’s a continuation of their love story; they held their scientific wedding on 23rd May, 2020 during lockdown.

Did the wedding come soon after?

No. He proposed on 15th August 2019 ( which is assumption day in the Catholic Church). We held our wedding on 23rd May, 2020, which is almost a year after.

The wedding

Did you ever think it would such a small event?

Honestly no! We had planned to have two big events; an introduction and a white wedding, with each hosting over 500 guests.

We had initially planned for 25th April 2020 but Covid came. We had just had one wedding meeting before public gatherings were stopped. We talked to our families and friends and a few supported us but as the bride, I didn’t.  Every girl has a dream wedding in their mind and I couldn’t believe that I wasn’t going to be able to have mine.

I talked to my fiancé and we pushed to 23rd May hoping that by then we would be able to do it the African way but then in mid April the president extended the lockdown by 21 more days. That’s when my fiancé and I finally agreed to go ahead with the event the scientific way.

We sat down and agreed on the scientific wedding then informed our parents and the organizing committee who were very supportive and encouraged us. To us, the sacrament of holy matrimony was the goal. As much as we wanted the fun and having all our loved ones to attend, our main goal was saying our vows before God. We wanted the lord to start our marriage journey with us. We talked to the priest who agreed as long as key parties were present. We had few guests but everyone was happy. We might not have planned for a scientific event but we actually had the wedding of our dreams. If we had seen such weddings happen before, we would have opted for it in the first place.

We had 23 guests. Eden decorators did the decor and our theme colors were lilac, white and a touch of peach..

We actually saw a meme later that really made sense to us. “Those who want to get married are getting married, those who want a wedding are waiting for corona to end.” It was funny but totally made sense.

Wow moment

Our first dance we had really practiced so much and I was just waiting for the moment but due to curfew, we couldn’t have it. My girls and I had practiced. We had made a nice song list, chosen the costumes for the dance but we were unable to do it all. But we shall have the dance on our anniversary

(Sad!)

Kukyala and Intro

Kukyala was held last year. The intro was a scientific one too. We held it two days before the wedding. We managed to meet all the kitooro cultural obligations during the small event.

Cake

It was a fruit cake with chocolate and vanilla flavors.

Wardrobe

I hired my gowns from Tender bridal. We had   booked them before lockdown so all we needed was to get the RDC’s  letter to be able to go and access the gowns. She couldn’t deliver because only cars with stickers were allowed to move.

Victor and his best man’s outfits were provided by HASH suits.

Salon

The groom went to his barber while my makeup and hair were done by Saraphinah Faces.

Walking down the aisle and my grandpa handed me over to my husband😍. That’s a moment I can never forget. Then our vows, knowing I was finally getting married to the love of my life with God and our parents as witnesses. The smile on my moms face . The satisfactory smile of “we have made it. I’m so proud of you my baby girl”. My mom was so happy😃 then our photoshoot was so much fun. Our wedding night was magical too .😍🔥

(Grandparents. The people we can never replace)

You know, it’s the moment that almost made me cry. And he kept saying sweet things and encouraging me. He said “BE OUR AMBASSADOR “

 Challenges?

Effects of lockdown. Movement was hard, plazas were closed and so getting things was hard. Getting my grandfather from the village to town was hard yet he was very essential for the functions especially the introduction. Getting RDC permission letters was another hustle. Those guys made us move lots of times only to be told to return the next day. When you arrive the secretary tells you that they are out distributing food. Police, traffic, prices were high…

Advice to those planning to get married

Keep focused on the main thing which is the sacrament. Money shouldn’t stop you from getting married. You can actually hold an event that fits within your budget with no stress at all. Put God first in everything, He is always faithful.

The problem with standing in the middle of the room is that you become part of the narrative and the power to tell the story is stripped off you. I pour it out in writing, shaping the river into words.
