This year’s edition of Swahili Fashion Week held last weekend at the Tanzania National Museum. As usual, the three day event ended with the Swahili Fashion Week Fashion Awards, which recognize creatives working in the industry in the region and the entire continent.
Gloria Haguma, a fashion writer currently with The Daily Monitor emerged East African Fashion Journalist of the year. Top male model Waiswa Ronald of Joram Model Management emerged East African male model of the year. Models Mushema Housen and Waiswa Ronald walked for a number of designers including Afrika Sana and Kai’s Divo Collection. Anita Beryl and Kajuka Abbas were the Ugandan designers that presented their new collections.
Swahili Fashion Week is a fast growing platform for fashion and accessory designers from Swahili speaking countries and the African continent to showcase their talent, market their creativity and network with clientele and the international fashion industry. This is all aimed at emphasizing to the region that fashion is an income generating creative industry, meanwhile promoting a “Made in Africa” concept. It was founded by celebrated Tanzanian couturier, Mustafa Hassanali in year 2008.
