This Year’s Shebang Fashion show took the Vibes to the Ghetto

By  |

This year’s Shebang Fashion show was quite different. From the fancy venues that the past 3 editions have been hosted, the 4th edition was special. With this year’s theme tackling Climate Change and Recycling, Shyaaka Farid Lwanyaaga chose the ghetto as the runway space and venue for the event.

The event that happened over the weekend happened in Namuwongo Kasanvu, a slum setting located in the outskirts of the city centre. The heap of rubbish together with the railway line acted as the day’s runway with models showcasing while the locals gathered to see someone new in the area with others not minding the concept but rather running to cross to the other side of the railway but passing in between the models. The producers of the show didn’t mind them not even stop them but perhaps they took it as another form of art.

The different designers who showcased at the fashion show came out with fashion that depicts climate change and recycling. The outfits were made from plastics and other recycled materials and the models posed for a photo on the hip of rubbish, one of the places were the recycled material is gotten.
Amongst the designers that showcased included Njola Impressions, Quill Clothing, Bobbin Case and Trevor Kaye’s Orboremi.

The Shebang Fashion show is a product of the Wellbeing Foundation, an organization that tackles and handles different aspects of life using fashion as a tool of communication. In the past editions, they used fashion to promote menstrual hygiene and also kill the stigma surrounding menstruation and this year, they used Fashion to educate about climate change and waste recycling. The first edition of the Shebang Fashion show took place at Motiv in Industrial area with the second and the third happening at Design Hub in Bugoloobi. The fourth and recent edition took place just a few metres from Design Hub.
