“There’s Nothing You Cannot be or do If You Set Your Mind to it” – Sylvia Owori Shares Powerful Message to Tesi Fashion School Graduands

Tesi Fashion School, a design institution founded by renowned couturier Fatumah Asha, put on its annual graduation show last Friday at the Golf Course Hotel in Kampala. The event was graced by Ms. Sylvia Damalie Owori, the Director of Operations at Operation Wealth Creation as the guest of honor. The fashion icon described the evening as “the best day in my life”, and got overwhelmed with emotions all through the show. In her keynote speech, she lauded Fatumah Asha for being generous with her knowledge and skills and challenged the rest of the fashion industry to do the same.

“When I started African Woman magazine, it was one of the best magazines, and every month we had to send various copies to various embassies all over the world and in the congress of the united states, it was the only African magazine that was there, so if we can achieve that, we can achieve anything,” she recalled. “I’d like to encourage you all to not give up on your dreams, there’s nothing you cannot be or do if you set your mind to it. Let no one tell you what you cannot do,” she added.

Sylvia Owori is considered to be the architect of the current fashion industry, having been the founder of what is perhaps the most successful Ugandan fashion brand. Her eponymous brand was founded in the late ‘90s. Its success led to her taking charge of the Miss Uganda franchise in Uganda from 2001 to 2004. She later ventured into publishing launching African Woman Magazine, a glitzy fashion publication. She’s currently working in government as the Director of Operations at Operation Wealth Creation.

“I see a lot of fashion achievements today; we have models all over the world representing Uganda, Miss Uganda is doing well, and the makeup industry is flourishing too. One day maybe we can put all of them together and make the best industry in the whole of Africa,” she shared. “I want to make you a promise that this industry is going to be ten times what it is because I can influence in government, what all of you have to do is work together and be united.”

She concluded with another message to the students who had brought her to tears with their exhilarating collections. “When everyone laughed when everyone never took me seriously, I always believed. Don’t stop believing in yourselves!”

The event was hosted by Galaxy FM’s Prim Asiimwe and produced by Joram Model Management in partnership with Mella Events (decor), Pamela Musimenta (makeup), and Satisfashion UG.
