South African Designer Thebe Magugu Explores the Concept Of Motherhood in The 2nd Installment Of his Acclaimed Heritage Series

By  |

The concept of family is imperative to designer Thebe Magugu’s work and to mark the relaunch of www.thebemagugu.com on the 13th of June, the brand has released a special heritage dress capsule, which explores the concept of motherhood in South African cultures.

The nine dresses in the collection feature an example of a mom and a child by the artist Phathu Nembilwi and represent the traditions of nine official cultures in South Africa: Basotho, Zulu, Swazi, Vhavenda, Vatsonga, Bapedi, Tswana, Xhosa and Ndebele.

For the muses in the image above, Thebe invited women who have been a personal inspiration to him and are also leaders in their respective fields, across music, film, law, fashion, art, and politics. Strength, as you will see in the artistic portraits that support this project, is a critical component of this project and the women here have shown it in such a sophisticated, powerfully feminine, and graceful manner.

“Seeing the women in my family have to carry children on their backs and necessities on their heads always reminded me of (incredibly chic) Afro totem poles; a showcase of utter strength both physical and symbolic and I wanted to pay homage to this memory.” -says Thebe

This has been photographed by fine art photographer Tatenda Chidora and art director Chloe Andrea Welgemoed. Muses (Left to Right): Zandile Tshabalala, Pearl Thusi, Lindi Mazibuko, Bee Diamondhead, Syntiche Kabuya, Lita Miti-Qamata, Nadia Nakai, Reneilwe Lebea, Anak Akol.
