Skincare For Men: 5 secrets Every Man Should Know

By  |

While women tend to spend a small fortune on a multi-step skincare routine, men fall on the other end of the spectrum where their skin is usually the most neglected part of their daily routine. But to look groomed and polished, a basic ritual can help you deal with a lot of skin issues like acne, dryness, inflammation and even sun damage.

All you need to do is make a little bit of an effort and train yourself to maintain a skincare routine, just like you brush your teeth or workout every day. So, keep that bar of soap aside for a minute and try these five steps to understand your skin better and build a routine that would actually work for you.

Skincare for men: 5 secrets every man should know.

1. Identify your skin type

Understanding your skin type is the first step to building a solid skincare routine. Whether you have normal, dry, oily, combination or sensitive skin, slapping on any skincare product may do more harm than good without knowing what products, ingredients and chemicals your skin requires.

Here’s a secret though: your skin type is not going to be constant. It may change over the course of time, depending on your location, your lifestyle, your age, and the weather.

Invest in products that are targeted for your skin type. But bear in mind that it’s also unwise to keep using the same products over the years.

The best thing to do, in this case, is to consult a professional on a regular basis. Log in to your calendar to get a six-monthly or a yearly visit to the dermatologist to keep your complexion looking fresh.

2. A basic routine is the best routine

The idea of choosing and curating a skincare routine can be daunting, especially if there’s a plethora of products to choose from. A basic routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising (twice a day), will keep things simple for you.

Using fewer products will not feel too overwhelming or tedious for you to do it regularly. Once you identify which products work best for your skin, stick to them for a few months before you transition to a different weather condition or a different location.

3. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

The secret to an even complexion is exfoliation. This is an important step as it gets rid of dead skin and improves the texture of the skin.

If you’re new to exfoliation, start with a mild one before going for chemical scrubs that tend to penetrate deep into the skin and work its magic.

No need to get too aggressive with exfoliation, adding this step to your skincare routine once or twice a week can do the trick.

4. Don’t shy away from serums

Now that you’ve got the base of your skincare sorted out, if there’s anything specific that you wish to change about your skin, trust that a serum will help you out.

If you think that serums will mess up your oily skin or will make you look like you just came from a workout, then we are glad to bust that myth for you.

Think of serums as a magic potion that work on issues like wrinkles, or acne, or elasticity. Vitamin C and retinol are the most commonly used serums that are specifically targeted to brighten the skin and give a sort of youthful glow to it.

5. Never skip sunscreen

SPF is one of the most overlooked steps in men’s grooming. Protecting your skin from pollutants and the sun is crucial for a great-looking complexion.

Even Wolverine, aka Hugh Jackman, in a recent Instagram post, shared that he might have basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer.

He said, “Missing a single day of sunscreen in your everyday life is unlikely to cause significant harm to the skin. However, missing it every day will increase your risk of skin cancer.”

Find a non-greasy one and use two fingers full of it on your face after the moisturiser step, 30 minutes before you step out in the sun.

If you think that you’re just going to be indoors all day and can skip this step, then let us remind you that the blue light that your screen emits can also damage your skin.

As tedious as it may sound, you do have to reapply it every three hours, especially if you’re outdoors most of the day. In this case, a spray-on sunscreen does the trick.
