Most of us understand that picking the right outfit for an interview is crucial, but after that, how many of us decline into a spiral of casual-wear and lacklustre grooming once we’ve secured the job?
New research from the University of Chicago suggests that your office appearance may have a bigger and more financial impact than you realise.
A total of 14,600 men and women were monitored for 13 years after the end of school and into their careers. Researchers interviewed participants four times during this period and rated their attractiveness and style before comparing it to their salaries.
While you might assume that there was a correlation between those rated with better style and their yearly take-home pay, the extent to which this proved to be true might surprise you.
Although the correlation was stronger for women, they found that “attractive individuals earn roughly 20 per cent more than people of average attractiveness”.
Interestingly, the gap was reduced when grooming did not vary between the groups, “suggesting that the beauty premium can be actively cultivated”. So even if you aren’t Angelina Jolie, there’s no excuse for skipping your grooming routine.
