Mikka and Jawuharah Intend To Have A Bigger Wedding When The Pandemic is Over!

By  |

Mikka Riyadh and Jawuharah Namagembe spent weeks planning a big ‘Nikkah’ (Islamic wedding), but little did they know that their nuptials would be a small intimate ceremony attended by just 50 guests. The entrepreneurs exchanged their vows on 13th June, 2020 in the presence of their family and close friends. Although the couple is content with the small event they had, they plan on having a bigger event as soon as the pandemic is over. Here is their wedding story!

The engagement

We met through a friend and have known each other for five years. Then he proposed on my birthday dinner. He surprised me because I honestly didn’t expect it. I thought it would be my usual birthday celebration, we had dinner and just as we were about to leave, he asked me for a minute for him to say something to me. That’s when he got down on one knee and popped the question. The ring didn’t even fit my engagement finger so we went with the wedding finger. I was overjoyed.

The Nikkah

We planned the Nikkah for two months, only for the pandemic to happen, and we had to have a small event. We hosted 50 guests in Mutundwe. We chose a pallet setting because the event was held indoors and since we are Muslims, it was a perfect idea. However, we had a few high chairs for the elderly. Our theme colours were green, white and peach done by Delight Décor. We do plan to have a bigger nikkah reception when the pandemic is over.

I chose all the outfit colours and the décor arrangements because those are my favourite colours. All my outfits were from Maria’s bridals while Bryt suits dressed Mikkah. Minispher muslimah services did my makeup and henna.

We had no entertainment!

Challenges

Being in lockdown was my only challenge. It limited a lot of things from transport to getting service providers.

Advice

My advice to couples is to plan everything together. The bouncing around and exchange of ideas comes a long way in bringing you together. Putting a wedding together should be a memorable experience.

The problem with standing in the middle of the room is that you become part of the narrative and the power to tell the story is stripped off you. I pour it out in writing, shaping the river into words.
