Lessons from Aamito’s dinner
It was a cocktail of glamor pomp and lots of fashion at Aamito’s congratulatory dinner last Friday. Kampala’s fashion enthusiasts descended upon the Serena Hotel to officially welcome home the Africa’s Next Top model winner.
The event which was attended by the host of reality TV show Oluchi Orlandi brought to life a lot of things that we probably didn’t know we could do as Ugandans. I’ve never attended a well put together fashion show in Kampala in a long time. It was refreshing to see things happening like they do in Milan and Cape Town.
A dress by Kwesh. One of my favorites of the evening.
The fashion show featured designers such as Kwesh, Gloria Wavamunno, Stella Atal and Martha Jabo among others and they put on a great show. These were real designs not ‘tops‘ and ‘pencil skirts ‘ that we usually see on our runways. Fashion is about creation which was well represented on the runway.
Our models didn’t disappoint too. The fashion morphs hovered all over the runway like they were on a challenge on America’s Next Top model. If this was a casting, Oluchi would have scouted quite a number of models. I also don’t want to think that all this happened because the the Nigerian super model was in attendance.
Uganda has a lot of potential. We can organise breathe taking fashion shows. We can showcase ‘real designs’ that are even wearable. We also have great models. Let’s tap all this potential.
Aamito will be heading to New York soon to kick start a new phase in her career. There was no better way to send her off than a reminder of what Uganda can offer.
