“Never ask a girl with winged eyeliner why she’s late …” – that’s a popular line in the makeup world. Creating the perfect ”wing” is a real work of art that takes precision, and practice !
A winged eye makes you look fierce and stunning at the same time . It’s another beauty staple that isn’t going anywhere. Wondering how to draw a ”perfect wing”? Don’t worry, here’s a guide to help you do that and hopefully with more practice, it will become as natural to you as it is to Mona Faces.
First before drawing your wing, you need three main products that is a primer, a concealer and eyeliner of course. Before you start drawing out a “wing” you need to consider which eyeliner to use.
There are three types of eyeliners basically, there’s gel eyeliner, liquid eyeliner and pencil eyeliner.
Gel eyeliner is a favorite for many makeup artists. It may seem a bit intimidating to use at first, but gel eyeliners are matte which is great especially if you’re going in for a cat eye look and they also glide on way easily on the skin compared to liquid and pencil eye liner.
Gel liners usually come in a little pot with an angled brush to use them . Top favorite gels are Mac Pro Longwear Fluidline ( find this one at the Mac store at Acacia mall ) and the Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In Place Gel Eye liner ( can be found at Linton’s Beauty world at Acacia mall) .
Liquid eyeliner, I like to say is for the experts. If you are good with drawing “wings” then the liquid liner should be your friend. It requires precision and takes some time to dry! A good one to opt for here is the Sketch Marker Liquid Art Liner by Too Faced Cosmetics .
Pencil Eyeliner! This is one very common eyeliner . It’s literally a pencil drawing on your skin. It’s perfect for creating the smokey eye and lining your waterline. If you like using wanja, opt for a pencil eye liner, its precision is way better than wanja can ever be.
As always, before doing any kind of makeup, it’s important to prep the area you are going to work on . Cleanse the entire face with a good cleanser and then moisturize it. If you have an eye cream then apply it around the eye area to even out any discoloration around the eyes and to tone down on the wrinkles if you have any you might want to conceal.
Now it’s time to apply your primer around your eyes and any place you may apply makeup on , for now we are concentrating on the eyes. The primer helps keep the makeup in place for a longer time and that’s what we want most of the times – long wear makeup. Add a good concealer on top of your eyelids and set it with setting powder .
Then comes the real work . Whatever you’re using , a pencil , liquid pen or a brush for gel liner, draw small lines and strokes right above your lashes. Start with tiny strokes and keep dragging them out to the end of the eye. It’s better to start with thin strokes of eyeliner , just in case you make a mistake, it will be easier to correct a thin line compared to large lines of liner. But don’t you worry if things get messy , clean it up with makeup remover or a soaked cotton swab.
Keep building it up on your lash line while keeping it as symmetrical as possible .
Remember to always look down while creating a wing , looking up will make you create a wrong shape . And if you have a table or makeup desk , rest your elbows on that as you draw, it will give you a steady hand.
In order to make your eyeliner sharp, place a mini strip of masking tape or cotton swab at the outer corner of your eye, angling it towards the end of your eyebrows. Draw a dot at the point where you want your wing to stop , that should be about halfway the masking strip or cotton swab. Connect the line you left on the lashes to the dot using the masking tape or cotton swab as a guide. The tape or cotton bud should help you keep the line straight. And then use the edge of the tape to draw out the wing.
Intensify this line as much as you want depending on what kind of wing you want to create .
However don’t over do it because the best wings are the sleekest and thinnest, yet visible.
To finish it off , apply lashings of mascara to your eyes to make them them pop even more.
And there you have it , a perfect winged eye! Keep practising this and in no time , you’ll be able to draw a wing with your eyes closed!
Good luck !
Truly,
