How Larry Jay Pays Homage to African Culture through Fashionable Designs and Patterns

By  |

Larry Jay is a Ghanaian unisex clothing and accessory brand founded by Larry Jafaru Mohammed. The brand nurtures ethical fashion, and mainly derives its inspiration from Nature, various African cultures, and arts combining them with modern, streamlined silhouettes. It is also heavily influenced by 70s fashion, making its design aesthetic Timeless and Unusual.

Larry Jafaru began his journey into the fashion world by patching his t-shirts with old wax prints from his mother’s closet. She adored it, so she was constantly giving him more of her old wax prints to incorporate into his creations, thus creating accessories for himself and his friends. He then moved on to commercialize his craft, resulting in the birth of Larry Jay in 2012.

The brand began as a fashion accessory line but quickly expanded by leaps and bounds

Since then, he has released 4 major collections, 3 spring/summer collections in 2017, 2018, and 2019, and an autumn/winter collection in 2019, as well as participating in fashion shows in Ghana and Nigeria. These include Ghana Men’s Wear Week in 2017 and 2018, as well as Glitzafrica Fashion Week in 2018. He also had a solo fashion presentation for his autumn Winter’19 collection and debuted his SS20 Zongo collection at Lagos Fashion Week in 2019.

Tie and dye has been one of the most commonly fabrics used by the brand, making it a signature fabric.

Larry Jay is also known for to be a full-service sustainable fashion house that is environmentally conscious as well as an empowerment brand that contributes to the community in its little way.
