The biggest vibiest festival in Uganda is back, and as usual there is so much to expect. From great music, 24 hour partying and great vibes, the one thing we are most excited for is the fashion. It is that time of the year when you don’t have to wear your usual closet and get to play around with your options. While it’s a generally rule free environment, so those usual fashion rules we have come to follow to a tee are literally torn apart limb from limb to create the waviest of lewks. Here are some of the main ones:
Do Not Over Accessorize
When heading to the festival, not only is this an unnecessary rule but also it is perfectly fine to wear 4 necklaces, 3 pairs of earrings and 14 rings. Trust us, we’ve seen it work.
Go Easy On The Prints
Print on print seems like it only works when done carefully; balancing larger prints with smaller ones and so on. But at Nyege Nyege, feel at home with all you Kitenge, Ankara, Tie Dye and the like going on one outfit. If you have a lot of fabric you can even show up matching with your bestie and not look like an arrival at the twin festival.
Hair Has To Be Neat and Professional
Big No No! Bring out all the colours, all the interesting cuts and styles, all the creativity! Want to wear flowers in your head? Do it. Feel like that bright pink wig with a crown on top? No one’s stopping you. Want your hair to take up literal space wherever you go? Give us your best!
Fanny Packs Are Out Of Style
Not only are they cool, but they are functional as well. This 90’s staple made a comeback last year and fit right into the festival energy. No more lost phones, dropping money or losing bags because they are too heavy to carry around everywhere. Light, fashionable and functional, get yourself one before the event so you can be ready for anything.
Minimal Makeup Is In
Well if you actually like the natural makeup look then well and good. But for the adventurous festival goers, there’s a whole lot more than just a nude lip and a smokey eye when the equation of makeup is brought up. Body art and bold lipstick are the wave. Get yourself a nice blue lippie, or an arm full of body paint by Kampala’s finest.
Fashion and Comfort Don’t Mix
Well since You’re going to be partying from dawn till dusk on repeat for 4 days, you might as well be comfortable while doing it. Shorts, loose pants, and large tees done right will keep you styling without having to suck in your gut too. It’s time to literally let loose!
What rules are you going to break this September? Let us know in the comments!
