Fashion Police – Met Gala 2018 Edition: Daniel Kaluuya, The Olsen Twins, Jaden Smith, Rihanna and More

By  |

Welcome to a special edition of Fashion Police, The Met Gala. The iconic event, which is the opening party of the Metropolitan Museum’s annual fashion exhibition is often described as the Oscars of fashion. This year’s night of glam held last evening in New York and served us a sea of statement headpieces, floor-grazing trains and lots of religious symbolism.

The theme of the costume exhibit  was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” and the gala’s dress code was “Sunday Best”. In this special edition of fashion police our cop reviews the standout red carpet looks highlighting the absurdly off-theme choices, the extremely boring gowns, the best looks, and of course, Rihanna. As usual, expect verdicts such as Flop-ish, fly, hot mess and flop.

Hit it!

Chadwick Boseman

Chadwick Boseman was almost edible in this Versace, next-to-real imitation of a priest’s cloak. The cape is magic on its own and enchantment with the rest of the outfit. His embellished pants and golden shoes were just the right amount of detail to keep it high fashion. This was absolutely the best dressed man of the evening.

Rihanna

Rihanna stops the show as the first female pope. Complete with a papal hat, Rihanna’s heavily embellished suit reigned supreme amidst the sea of gowns. It’s fun, creative and glamorous. Rihanna certainly outdid herself this time.

Zendaya

Zendaya’s custom made female Roman warrior gown by Atelier Versace inspired by Joan of Arc gave us a jaw dropping moment . The grace she carried herself with as she walked in this heavy gown was remarkable. The short hairdo was a cautious well calculated move that paid off. I’m dazzled.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry stuns in this Versace costume complete with wings. I guess we now have a vague idea of what Ark Angel Gabriel’s girlfriend looks like. Those wings were life itself, the articulate immaculate detail of the craft, the gold dress behind the mesh detailing, the thigh-high gold boots. I’m shook

Madonna

This theme was made for Madonna and she didn’t disappoint. She went all out with a saints crown, piggy tails, gothic gown, black lace veil, all complete with black roses. I guess she was the angel of death, kudos to her for a tremendous execution; hers was not just an outfit, it was a production.

Janelle Monae

A high fashion reference to the Vonn Trap family governess in The sound of music, Janelle Monae executes this outfit in her signature white and black. A good interpretation, a creative choice, a wonderful execution and still very ‘Janelle Monae’.

Mary J Blige

Mary J Blige could oscillate between the goddess of war and a guardian angel meant to protect and nourish; she not only nourishes our eyes in this pale blue gown with a heavily embellished bodice but still lets us feast on thigh power and beautiful cuts of this dress. Magnificent!

Gigi Hadid

Gigi Hadid’s Atelier Versace gown is the stuff of goddesses. Inspired by cathedral windows, this gown explored a whole new dimension of the theme. It’s absolutely divine.

Solange

If Mary Magdalene were a saint, I bet this is what her portrait would look like. Solange brings mystic with a black leather constructed Iris Van Herpen dress with matching thigh high stockings in clear glass sandals. The dress, makeup, headpiece and jewellery is effortlessly stunning.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj hit the MET Gala 2018 red carpet in red sequined  Oscar de la Renta gown emulating the crucifixion. The head piece is a tribute to the Roman guards, the red grown commanded a kind of presence on the red carpet fit for a queen. Wow.

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian West looked elegant and sexy in this golden gown. It hugs her features and shows off her body very well. However, two crosses on the gown does not warrant it an appearance on the best dressed list. This was sheer laziness. Those crosses look like a ‘by-the-way’, attached  to the dress last minute to make it ‘theme- appropriate’. There’s no way they blend into the outfit (actually they kinda fade away when you look at this dress from a far). I’m not impressed.

Kerry Washington

Ever wondered what the costume for the maid in the X-men mansion would look like? Look no further, Kerry Washington is wearing it. What in the name of hideousness is going on? This is the exact kind of monster that haunts teenagers in their dreams on Elm Street. The cut, silhouette and fabric are not only basic but utterly docile. She looks like an incongruous Christmas present much like when Mr Ibu wrapped his son up and donated him at a wedding

Salma Hayek Pinault

Salma was the highlight of all disappointment at the event. With a husband who is the CEO of Kering the luxury group that manages renowned fashion brands such as Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent and more, the actress showed up clad in a simple dress with a print of the ‘supposed paradise’. What a bore! To me,  it was like a Chinese bedsheet with a forest and birds drawn on it. She could have skipped the event and headed right back to the zoo where this inspiration was gotten. This was terrible, lazy and boring. You let down François-Henri Pinault, and 9999 others.

“What the Forever 21 is going on here, ” some one tweeted.  Trying to pull off a nun in training is not easy, just ask this lady. With her hair pulled back, nude lipstick, thigh high black socks, funky leather boots, a large round color instead of that kindergarten one and a black lace veil, this could have been one of the most creative looks on the Met gala red carpet. But it was a miss. The execution of this outfit is just outright cheesy, more like a pole dancer role playing as a naughty nun.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez might as well be battling illness but stepping out like this on a glamorous event is a big NO NO. Her glam-squad (hair & makeup) should have done a better job at putting her together and her style team could have gotten her a better gown that flatters her now plus size body. They did her wrong.  Sorry Selena.

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott

Kylie and Travis Scott might as well have been on a date somewhere because they too decided to just wear anything fwaaaa. It’s kinda cute though that they coordinated their outfits.Travis’s outfit is like a cheap rip-off of Deanarys Targerian’s war suit. Kylie’s dress is cute but both of them didn’t dress to the theme.

VERDICT; FLOP-ISH

4/10

Jaden Smith

Jaden Smith’s outfit is really cool to wear to the mall, or airport but not the Met Gala. He really didn’t even try at all; sneakers, a T-shirt, necklace & coat??? Really? For someone born to HollyWood Royalty, we expected better. Atleast he could have shown up in a dress (like he usually does). He shouldn’t be allowed back next year. Anna, kindly blacklist this one…

Gabrielle Union

Yellow is the color if happiness, but it did little to make us happy with Gabrielle Union’s dress. There are no catholic or heavenly references in this outfit and although it’s a gorgeous gown, it’s still a missed opportunity for the actress.

VERDICT; FLOP

2/10

Kendall Jenner

Given what everyone else wore, Kendall Jenner looks like she’s going to stay home and pet her dogs in this all white ensemble. Whatever her aim was, it didn’t fit the dresscode and so, it’s a flop. In another world though, this would be a gorgeous outfit; the flare pants with little trains are genius. Kris, come take your child away!

VERDICT; FLOP

3/10

Daniel Kaluuya

Daniel Kaluuya is dressed ready for a local wedding at Namiyingo pub, not the Met gala. This is laziness at its best! Its like he jumped out of bed, dusted his graduation suit, smiled to himself and thought he’s dressed up like it’s a dogs dinner.  I don’t know what sort of sorcery drove him to wear this off-theme grey suit, on second thought, he could have been trying to imitate Morgan Freeman in ‘Bruce Almighty’ by showing up as an understated ‘god’…but even that could have turned out the same, epic fail.

VERDICT; FLOP

1/10

The Olsen Twins

Not only did Mary Kate & Ashley fail to adhere to the dresscode, their clothes were absolutely hideous! I could have sworn they were auditioning for roles as old witches on Charmed. Their makeup made them look pale, dehydrated and much older than they are! Their looks were just as exhausting as their fashion choices. A complete disaster.
