Designers, stylists, and industry professionals converged for the Satisfashion UG Talk, a session dedicated to exploring sustainability and the transformative potential of circular design practices.
The discussion was had at a pivotal time as global fashion production faces increasing scrutiny for its environmental footprint. The session focused specifically on the proactive role designers must play in reducing textile waste and rethinking the entire lifecycle of a garment; from initial concept to end-of-life disposal.
Among the key contributors was Racheal Ifedolapo Bomodeoku, Creative Director of Udela Designs. Drawing from her professional experience, Bomodeoku argued that sustainability should be viewed as a “design opportunity” rather than a creative limitation. She shared insights into her studio’s rigorous commitment to circular principles, highlighting projects that utilize zero-waste pattern-cutting and reclaimed materials. “By experimenting with reclaimed fabrics, we can transform discarded materials into contemporary garments that maintain high standards of craftsmanship and silhouette,” Bomodeoku noted, demonstrating that environmental responsibility and luxury aesthetics can coexist seamlessly.
The conversation was further bolstered by renowned fashion professional Joram Muzira, who stressed that the burden of sustainability cannot rest on the shoulders of designers alone. Muzira called for a collaborative ecosystem, noting that a truly circular industry requires a unified effort from manufacturers, retailers, and the consumers themselves.
