Design Brand To Know: Ahluwalia
Multi-award-winning label Ahluwalia was launched in 2018 by Priya Ahluwalia. Ahluwalia represents the intersection between near and far, past and present.
The label combines elements from the designer’s dual Indian-Nigerian heritage and London roots. It explores the potential of vintage and surplus clothing by giving existing material a new life through various textile and patchwork techniques. This means that many Ahluwalia pieces are one of a kind.
Inspired by art, music and literature, much of the work created by Ahluwalia go beyond her collections and include collaborative campaigns, books and films. Ahluwalia is deemed as a pioneer in the fashion industry and is regularly featured in press from all over the world, from the New York Times and i-D to Vogue and many more.
The brand’s latest SS 23′ collection dubbed ‘Africa is Limitless’ is inspired by everything from vintage museum blankets from Tunisia to technicolor Sapeurs, album covers from Cote d’Ivoire and beaded elements from Kenyan and Rwandan cultures. The creative designer had this say about the collection:
“At the heart of SS23, are the boundless and enduring marks of the African people and their cultures. The research process led by Creative Director Priya Ahluwalia saw the creation of a vast visual tapestry in the studio, inspired by everything from vintage museum blankets from Tunisia, to technicolor Sapeurs, album covers from Cote d’Ivoire and beaded elements from Kenyan and Rwandan cultures. With ‘Africa Is Limitless’, Ahluwalia celebrates the nations of Africa’s many individual stories as a testament that all Africans know it to be: a vast wonderland of cultural innovation, rich in stories and histories that have waited too long to be told authentically. These stories will wait no longer.”
