Balance and Symmetry: What I Wore To My First Fashion Week!

By  |

There’s always a first time for everything. My first time attending fashion week was last weekend during the 6th edition of Uganda International Fashion Week. When I saw that there was a dress code, a pang of excitement ran down my back. I’m a sucker for a great dress code, not to mention, black is my favourite colour. Whenever I see black I think: France. Elegance. Croissants.

I knew I was going to wear all black from the jump and every time I thought about the event, my mind thought of this soft layered skirt I have. The evening before, once I got home I made a beeline for my bedroom and proceeded to turn it upside down looking for something to match the skirt with. I was shifting through all my black tops and realized I have a few too many t-shirts. I ended up wearing a spaghetti strap dress underneath it since it is of midi length like the skirt. Immediately I saw the pairing in the mirror, my brain went, ‘low bun and red lip, IMMEDIATELY!‘ I put my ensemble aside and got a bit of beauty sleep.

The next day while preparing I made a strong side part in my hair and pulled my hair tight into a bun at the base of my neck. After making two twists I wrapped them and gelled down my edges, and then added a black beret for that extra Parisian vibe. I grabbed my Ruby Woo and made the lippie look that I had dreamed of the night before and ran out. I wasn’t sure whether the night was all about moving up and down or not, but I knew I couldn’t head out in flats. How could I?

As I headed out of the house I almost made the mistake of grabbing my regular black sandal heels, but last minute I thought of my lip and decided to add a red companion somewhere, so the red heels it was.

Balance! Symmetry! Perfection! I think I wasted 20 minutes just looking in the mirror and wondering who the fine mama behind the glass was. Was that me? Was me that? Could I resist myself? Impossible.

I strutted out of the house and every one was wondering if I was going for a work situation or a date. If you asked me, I would say it was both, this was a fashion date and I was ready to be swept away by good clothing all night long!
