Sport has, over the years, outgrown the traditional field and track. Athletic apparel is no longer just something you wear to compete. It has found its way onto runways, magazine covers, music videos and into everyday wardrobes.

Sportswear has transcended sport.

On Thursday, Uganda’s social media timelines experienced something similar.

Videos and photographs from the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon kit reveal flooded feeds as Uganda Breweries Ltd offices in Luzira were transformed into an unexpected fashion venue.

Rather than settling for the conventional press conference, organisers treated invited guests to a runway presentation where lifestyle models, athletes and influencers transformed the official race kit into the evening’s biggest statement piece. Walking a purpose-built catwalk, the models paused beneath flashing cameras while photographers and television crews captured every detail of what organisers described as the marathon’s special fifth-anniversary collection.

In a market where marathon kits are often introduced through little more than a group photograph and a handshake, the launch, curated by Pivot Media, was a refreshing departure. It invited people to imagine the kit beyond race day, beyond the starting line and beyond the finish tape.

“It’s giving Arsenal season kit reveal vibes,” one commenter observed almost immediately.

The comparison wasn’t entirely misplaced.

The Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon has never positioned itself as just another road race. It has steadily grown into a lifestyle experience, and Thursday’s presentation was perhaps its boldest expression of that ambition yet.

Athleisure, the marriage of athletic performance and everyday fashion has become one of the defining movements in global style. Brands like Nike, Adidas, Puma and New Balance have long realised that people don’t just want performance wear; they want pieces they can wear to brunch, to the airport, on a coffee run or to a concert.

For a long time, Africa has largely watched from the sidelines.

But Thursday’s reveal suggested that perhaps the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon is ready to change that conversation. More sporting events and apparel brands could certainly borrow a page from this playbook.

Speaking during the launch, Tusker Lite Brand Manager, Sandra Againe said the marathon has evolved into a lifestyle platform that celebrates adventure, wellness and community, making this year’s fashion-forward unveiling a natural progression.

“This is more than unveiling a running kit. We wanted to present something that reflects the lifestyle our runners have embraced over the years. The marathon has become a movement that brings together sport, tourism, culture and entertainment, and tonight’s presentation reflects exactly that.”

The runway itself unfolded like a well-curated collection. Elite athletes introduced the technical side of the apparel and lifestyle models demonstrated how effortlessly the pieces transition into everyday wear. Influencers then injected energy and personality through choreography before the entire cast returned for the official reveal of the anniversary collection.

After the show, guests were taken behind the design.

Maren Bjoergum of Equator Hikes explained the thinking behind the collection, from the symbolism of the colours and the inspiration drawn from the Rwenzori Mountains to the technical improvements in the fabric aimed at enhancing comfort and performance on race day.

Around the venue, previous marathon kits were displayed like an exhibition, offering guests a visual timeline of the event’s evolution while reinforcing the significance of five years of the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon.

More importantly, the evening showed that sports launches no longer have to live in the sports pages alone. Fashion, culture and lifestyle increasingly shape how people experience sporting brands, and the most memorable launches are becoming cultural moments rather than corporate announcements.
