African Barbie? Yes Please!

Singer Lira comes out with first African Barbie doll.

For those of us who grew up playing with Barbie dolls, we know the iconic look she always had. Long blonde hair, blue eyes, white skin. Well she’s taken a major turn over the years and there have been more and more diverse Barbie versions to come out, especially black versions. However, there has never been a Barbie doll inspired by an African, until now!

Lerato Molapo, South African musician and businesswoman better known as “Lira” broke the barrier and brought Barbie to Africa! It was released during the 60th anniversary Shero Campaign celebrating role models who little girls can look up to.
“I’m deeply honoured to be Barbie’s first African role model and am excited to align with brand that is on a mission to show girls more diverse role models. I have always been someone who endeavours the celebration of my skin tone and natural hair, and it is amazing to see this reflected in my doll which I hope will inspire girls across the African continent. This is an enormous gesture and affirmation that the world is celebrating Africa for who we are,” she said in her Instagram caption. Her version is super chic, following patterns of her short hair and statuesque face. It is also wearing a dress that I personally wouldn’t just want to play with.
