‘Abaume’: A Bold Collection by Zambian Designer Sam Bobo is Redefining Masculinity in Fashion
Zambian designer Sam Bobo, in his final year of study, unveiled the groundbreaking “ABAUME” collection, which means ‘MEN’ in his mother language. The collection is a vivid expression of self and a testament to his artistic evolution. Notably, he earned acclaim by winning the South African Fashion Week student competition in 2023.
Beyond the realm of fashion, Bobo’s vision transcends. He seeks to inspire men to embrace their femininity, challenging societal norms surrounding masculinity. Hailing from a place where such expressions are not always celebrated, Bobo aims to push boundaries and redefine perceptions, fostering a more inclusive and accepting society.
Sam Bobo had this to say about his work as a designer & his AW’ 24 Collection:
“When you come from the background I come from, where people and families don’t see fashion as a career option it’s difficult to shine as a creative or to be seen especially a fashion designer, but I am very proud of how far I have come and where I am heading to.
For the collection, I explored, experimented with the most 2 difficult fabrics to work with, played with different textures, took risks with colors and managed to pull through. Inspired by my own personal story, drawn from some of my past experiences and the toxic masculinity that has been played out for a very long time from my country-of-origin Zambia and no one there is talking about it due to the lack of education, rigid religious beliefs, Intolerance and broken government systems. This range is about men embracing femininity, pushing boundaries, challenging the concept and impression of toxic masculinity in Zambia.
