Meeting
We met through mutual friends. So, we were friends first, then two years later, we started dating and a year later, we said our vows.
He proposed to me at Skyz Naguru.
He organized dinner last year in December with the help of my best friend (I am hard to surprise). So, one Tuesday after work, he literally forces me to go to Skyz hotel and there I was in the middle of a proposal and pictures. It was romantic, just the two of us, exactly how I had always pictured it. No wonder, he used my best friend. We tied the knot on 24th October 2020.
Traditional/Kuhingiraoutfits
I was a confused bride right from my kugamba obugyenyi (pre visit). I had made a yellow dress (yellow is my favorite color) but one week to the pre-visit, I changed my mind because I felt like it wasn’t looking good anymore and with all the lockdown moods, I changed to a sky blue outfit.
When it came to the Kuhingira, my designer, Dorothy of Doro glam asked me to go and choose the fabrics and she was in awe at how I chose completely different colors. We sat down with my best friend, the designer and I, then I tried on the colors I had chosen and they agreed with my choices by the end of the day. I chose to be an unpredictable bride when it came to the color choices. None of my peeps could have imagined me in those colors because they were totally different.
The bridal gown
Now, this is a long story but I will summarize it. I had always wanted to do a dress that required no ring or heavy petticoat. For the few times I have been a bridesmaid/or in charge of bridal entourages, I saw how brides didn’t enjoy their big day because of the discomfort that comes with wearing the dresses they chose. These gowns are usually bulky and heavy. I had always pictured myself in a simple round snow white gown and that’s what I went for.
Of course, I did some bridal dress shopping, but this was way before I planned my wedding. I would go with brides/friends and see the dresses but also, I knew what I wanted. For my own, when I tried bridal gown shopping, I was discouraged when I visited one of the top bridal shops and when I asked for gowns without rings, they instead told me how I wouldn’t look good in one without one.
So, I stopped gown shopping and took a risk to tailor what I envisioned. I contacted my tailor Aliceof Mshon@, sketched a picture of what I wanted and I am very glad she pulled it off to the dot. I had emphasized simplicity and I am glad she didn’t go overboard for me. She gave me time, we sat down together through every step from purchasing the lace to hand stitching the pearls, and I would check in every once in a while. I had the best day and I was comfortable.
It took us approximately 3 months to have the gown ready. We started in July and most of the time was spent on the hand stitching details.
My changing dress was done by Ipigogo. I also just described what I wanted and she pulled it off.
You wore no Tiara
In a way, I love seeing tiaras on other people but never did I envision myself wearing one. I honestly don’t know why! Maybe because I think my head wouldn’t look good with it. Also, I had envisioned a not so neat hairstyle because my head looks small with straight, neat hair and Cerinah of Serene Beautywas there to help all the way.
The groom was so dapper!
Well, Larry casual did the magic. I was very impressed by what those guys did, especially because they had all the suits ready in two weeks. He loves blue so much, even when I tried to convince him otherwise he refused. I am glad he actually refused because he stunned all the way from the kuhingira to the wedding.
The bridesmaids
I gave them liberty to choose any shade of green because our theme was green. So, when they discussed and gave me their options, that shade caught my eye. A budding designer called Miracle Gracious of Mixnoberts made these dresses. She was actually one of the maids and oh my, my little girl did an amazing job! Everyone had to choose a neckline of their choice but the design had to be the same. They pulled off everything I asked for in a period of two weeks.
We agreed, they wouldn’t change so we added a green lace that matched the Matron’s dress which was done by a lady called Susan for church and they could ditch the lace for the reception party. They looked amazing, pictures don’t do them enough Justice!
The décor
I don’t know how to start. Our décor was done by the lovely Renzioni hill (I haven’t gotten over it). My then fiancé had seen his work at a friend’s wedding and when I talked to him he was excited which is unlikely for men. So we made an appointment and went to see him.
Interestingly, I just told him what we needed, green theme, blend with white and a little gold, flowers not to obstruct people and no table clutter. So basically, simple and clean. That man knows how to handle clients! We sat in his office, he gave us time and attention, served us tea and cookies and made us feel so comfortable, went through Pinterest together. He was always available when we had queries.
Well, after the meeting he said, “Oya, go rest, we shall harmonize towards the day.” All the other discussions were done via WhatsApp, we had a group created so it helped us keep synced. We had a demo a week to the function and I was wowed even before it was taken to the reception hall. To be honest, I was never worried because even when he doesn’t do what you ask for, he will do an amazing job because he is gifted, he is just too gifted.
He is a wedding planner, yes, but I did my own planning. What I did was create rapport with all my service providers and they would advise me whenever I was stuck or confused whether it was in their expertise or not. Cerinah and Renzioni mostly truly helped a lot. The way I troubled them you would think they were my planners.
To tell you the truth, Décor was my favorite part of the wedding. He got the hall late (golf course hotel-bouquet hall) but he turned it into a green garden that I had asked for. If he had mistakes or left out anything I did not notice (haha) because I was already floored by the work.
Cake
Susan of Suzie Cakes did our cake. She has always been baking my cakes, so I told her she would bake my wedding cake when the time came. I wanted a simple but beautiful cake, gave her a picture of what I wanted and she literally just copied and pasted it exactly how I wanted it.
A fruit cake for gifting then mint, vanilla, lemon and blue berry which are my favorite flavors for the main center piece. I am so proud of her.
Now if you know of a bride that had a cocktail of fashion designers, Carol had a piece of everyone for her beautiful day. But that aside, The green garden theme was a brilliant, lovely and beautiful idea. We loved it all.
