10 Things To Do Now That ‘Outside’ Is Open

"Tuli wawelu!"

It’s been a long, almost-2 years since the hammer came down and for our safety were put under lockdown. Lockdown is long lifted, but the 7pm curfew carried out longer than anyone ever expected.

Now that the outside is open, there are so many options for what to do – it’s almost overwhelming! Let’s dive into some of the things we can now do again

1. Cinemas

Netflix is nice, but it doesn’t change the vibe of being in the cinema at whatever time, laughing or screaming along with your friends. The popcorn and slushies coupled with anticipation in that pitch black room is simply unmatched.

2. Fashion events

We heard the ASFA’s are coming back this year, but not only that. Fashion shows, charity galas, award shows and other fashion filled events are bound to popup a lot more now, and what’s not to love! The virtual fashion shows were cute, but I want to be in the physical presence of good clothes.

3. Dinner date

The romantic girlies had been suffering! The lunches became lunches, and it can only get so intimate under the scorching afternoon sun. Now there is time to be wined and dined in candle light at your favourite eatery without thinking twice about it.

4. Overnight for Christians

Churches had been closed and heavily limited, but for the Christians who miss praying with their peers and moreso the electric energy of praying through the night, this comes with a huge relief. Now prayers are not limited to sun hours!

5. Concerts

Watching your favourite artist on NBS Katchup doesn’t hit the same as dancing with them in the same area. There are many people we would like to see live, and now it will be more accessible, and we cannot even!

6. Girl’s night out

Ladiesssss, I know you missed this. Sleepovers and house parties are cute but it doesn’t match getting dressed, doing makeup and painting the town red with your besties in tow. Now you can bar hop without worrying about ending up in the back of a police truck.

7. Late night drives

Some of you were “essential workers” during this whole time so driving around was fine, but it still wasn’t as free as it is to drive without expecting to be stopped and cross examined. Now if you’re the type to cool off with a nice long drive, now is the time to enjoy them even under the cover of night.

8. Bargain shopping

There is a certain magic that happens to prices when the sun goes down. We were missing out on that “darkness discount” for entirely too long. For the thrifting and bargain shopping girlies, it’s our time to shine again. Not to mention the people who run these businesses have the opportunity to make extra bucks. Happy shopping!

9. Attend to late night cravings

Nothing sucks more than being hungry in a very specific way and not being able to quench it. Now that outside is open, I can put Jumia Food people to work a lot longer than before, especially when my tongue wants fries from a specific restaurant.

10. Nyege Nyege festival

One of the biggest music and cultural festivals is coming back after 2 years, and it is worth celebrating in itself. If all goes well, in September we will all be in Jinja partying the weekend away. It’s kind of hard to have a 24 hour – 3 day event when there’s a 7pm curfew, no?
