On Monday evening, celebrities, media and a handful of fashion enthusiasts ascended upon Kampala Serena Hotel’s Crane Turaco for Sham Tyra’s debut fashion show. The invitation was to the brand’s ‘first look at her BOLDLY BOLD collection’. Typically, this would mean walking into a venue with a runway set up, but this wasn’t the case. We were welcomed into a hall with giant screens strategically positioned in every corner, which gave the impression that the show would actually be virtually.
When the show kicked off two hours later, digitally generated 3D curvy models strutted down the runway in designs that were both glamourous and ‘so Sham Tyra’. The Sham Tyra brand is known for its fabulous designs which come with unconventional drapery. The collection offered a galore of this and a lot more. It was incohesive with each piece standing out on it’s own. This was very telling of the inspiration Sham Tyra Nalwanga, the creative director of the brand, had as she pieced the collection together.
“Often times we’re told that we’re too loud. That we’re too much. This collection represents the spirit of individualism. It’s okay to be different. Every piece in this collection is too much,” she said minutes before the show. She worked with fabrics like satin, velvet and sequins. The concept of a 3D show was designed and put together by fellow designer Kasule Allan Raphael of K-Rafael, who described the collaboration as “rewarding.”
Nalwanga joins a new wave of designers who are re-thinking the traditional model of presenting shows. Anita Beryl of Beryl Qouture showed her ‘Futuristic Africa’ collection via Youtube, while Kai’s Divo Collection’s new collection ‘Hope’ was launched via Instagram Live.
