Zendaya and her team have been intent on solidifying her old Hollywood glamour image and her Golden Globe Awards engagement announcement is the peak . From highly curated, project focused method dressing, to her award show appearances, and other press in between – everything about her style can only be described as it’s working. When she wore this 1995 archive Thierry Mugler bodysuit for one of the Dune premieres in London, for example, her icon status was as good as solidified.
Her show-stopping engagement “non-announcement” took the most attention from the Golden Globes. While the event did not go without it’s whispers, like the drama behind the Wicked cast, or the odd fascination about watching Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalemet exist in relationship, the largest story by far was the speculated and later TMZ confirmed engagement to Spiderman co-star Tom Holland. She strutted down the red carpet in that sienna orange gown by Louis Vuitton, and had her neck and hands sparkling with Bvlgari jewelry.
The thing about the Bvlgari set is that the necklace, earrings and ring were very clearly matching, but the East-West cushion diamond on her left hand was not part of the set. They could’ve let the ring shine alone but the mixed jewelry brought with it mixed messages. Her stylist, Law Roach, stated that the look was “in honor of Diahann (Carroll), Eartha (Kitt), Dorothy (Dandridge) and Joyce (Bryant)” who are all Black old Hollywood icons of the yesteryear being channeled with this look. As she stood there statuesque, her hand hovering into the light – an announcement worthy of an absolute star was made. Video from inside the awards showed her displaying the ring to her friends, and later, an Instagram post resurfaced, which shows what looks like her ring, speculated to be by designer Jessica Mccormick, the 5-carat diamond ring is said to cost almost $200,000!
In a time when everything is either an impeccably produced announcement, or a social media post – hijacking an event like The Golden Globes to be the backdrop for such an announcement is the most chic thing I have seen over the last decade.
From her fashion transformation, to the very distinct way she got into stunning, memorable looks through the past awards seasons, it was clear to me when this moment with this brown Tom Ford look happened that Zendaya was an unstoppable force, and the fashion world is waiting with bated breath to see what her wedding looks like. Will she keep it as private as we expect, or will she have a Vogue wedding? Which designer will dress her? How many inches of hair will Law Roach rock at the wedding?
