Your guide to decluttering your closet as you prepare for the festive season

By  |

We only have a month and a few days left to end the year. Your closet is obviously screaming for a revamp after getting stressed and strained for almost 11 months. This is the time to make way for new pieces that you will wear during the festive season which is just a few weeks away.

Here is a simple guide on what you should and shouldn’t keep as you get the closet ready for the festive season. Some items must be given out, others should be taken to the tailor while others simply need to be sold off.

1. Keep the leather

leather jacket

Leather must stay

Leather is timeless. If the skirt or jacket was made from genuine leather, then don’t even think about giving it away.

2. Keep your African prints

Aztec print is already out

Prints are really tricky. While animal and African print is timeless, aztec and kaleidoscope isn’t . Aztec print is already tired and overused. If that dress is making your closet look like a mess, give it away.  Guard the other prints jealously.

3. Trash the  fakes

Fake designer bags should not fill up your closet

Fashion cannot live without fakes. Actually fake Louis Vuitton bags are the most popular on the market simply because they are affordable. If that bag is already showing signs of age after using it for only 5 months, don’t let it clutter your closet.

4. Clothes that are always at the tailor need to be given out

There’s always that skirt you are so attached to that you always take it to the tailor on a weekly basis. It’s time to let it go. If looking forever 25 is what you want,  then make way for skirts that fit you right. It’s time to give it to your young sister who won’t destroy it.

5. Keep the denim

You will never go wrong with denim that’s why it needs a special place in the closet.

6. Uncomfortable/ Ill fitting clothes should be given away

Holding onto a pair of shoes for sentimental value is fine, but if these shoes have been worn once because they are ill fitting then you have to let them go. Go to Tradelinks Africa on Facebook and sell them off. They are filling up your closet for no good reason.

7. Cashmeres, shawls and scarves should never go

Cashmere actually softens over time and holds up well over the years with proper care. Just one of the reasons why it’s worth the investment! Scarves are one of our favorite, most versatile accessories. Whether you wear one around your neck, tied around a purse handle, as a headband, or even as a belt, you can always find a purpose for a silk scarf.

8. Of course all worn out clothes should go

Enough said!
