Elijah Mcquinn, a Ugandan fashion label recently launched a travel bag line filled with envy worthy bags. We’re at their workshop, located in Kisementi in the heart of Kampala to chat with the creative director of the brand, Ms. Harriet Garimoi on her inspiration for the collection.

Harriet, what inspires you as a designer?

We are inspired by the vintage safari travels of the early 20^th century. Ambitious ladies who explored unknown territories in pursuit of a fulfilling career in a male dominated world. This style is matched to the needs of the modern working class women who need to combine a full time job with a family at home.

Your brand claims to be sustainable. Can you explain?

It is so sad that Uganda imports fake products such as leather from far Asian countries when our nation is blessed with all the resources it needs. We make of genuine animal skins and leather from indigenous goats and Ankole cow which grazed our green pastures. As these animals are roared for meat production their skin is usually a less popular byproduct. As a sustainable brand we recycle these resources on earth and turn them into gorgeous crafts.

What kind of designs do you offer?

Every lady needs a classy handbag which complements her outfit. Our leather tote bags can do just that and make you stand out amidst the crowd. Further we offer designs to the classiest ladies who need more discrete bags which can be converted from refined day use to serve an exquisite night time role. Also, we produce roll up backpacks for the modern traveler who wishes to carry many items at a go through the bustling streets Kampala.

How do you further support women`s beauty?
We explore with our clients how our designs and attributes can balance with their looks in perfect harmony. To help ladies show their beauty even further we now offer organic shea butter directly from Northern Uganda. Shea revitalizes, moisturizes and smoothens our delicate skins. We recommend you to use it as a night cream to remove dark patches under the eyes or to clear acne. Available in 30ml luxury travel packs.
