You know that one famous quote by someone probably important about eyes being the “window into the soul?” Well, in South Korea, people are mad tired-at least that’s what this crazy beauty trend is trying to say from initial observation. Ladies and Gents, I present to you the Puffy eye-lid look, beauty fad that has its peak in Asia, particularly the country of South Korea.
Usually we’d be telling you how to hide your eye bags with foundation, concealer-etcetera. We’d be recommending the most effective eye-bag creams and telling you where and how to get them. But women and men in South Korea are seemingly interested in the opposite.
What’s happening is that people strive for puffy under-eye circles with inflated lids that make you look like you’re from having a good cry.
The official term for the puffy-eyed look is ‘Aegyo Sal’ which is literally translated to mean charming fat. Why would anyone want fat (charming or other-wise) deposited under their eyes in a tired looking sort of way? Well amongst Koreans, puffy eyes are commonly found in children-hence having them supposedly makes one look younger.
You hate eye-bags? Koreans don’t! Those who can’t be bothered to layer on coats of make-up -or are naturally born with Aegyo Sal, get actual plastic surgery to achieve the look. Many resort to using commercial fillers and fat grafts. It’s generically known as a “Youthful lower eyelid fullness procedure.” A popular method is using Resylane commercial filler or fat-grafting. This is a surgical procedure that involves transferring one’s own fat tissue (usually from the abdomen, thigh or hip are) to the under-eye to create more volume. Ouch!
Others use sticky tape to get temporary “tear bags” or “love-bands!”
We all know how serious Koreans are about beauty-even the men are not left out of this fad with K-pop singers and celebrities all going out of their way to have youthful eyes.
The doctors themselves have mixed feelings about the surgical procedure. Some have out-rightly called it ridiculous. Other doctors however say that puffy eye-lids are indeed effective in making one’s face look youthful.
The process itself obviously comes with risks associated with going under the knife, yet many people, in Korea and around the globe still opt for this treatment. But who are we to judge? Besides, to quote the words of Beyoncé, “Pretty hurts.”
So do you find the love for eye-bags cute or unnecessary? Let us know below in the comments.
