Valentine’s Day might be over, but gifting your friend or loved one isn’t. Looking for a way to put a smile on their faces, Sweet Tooth Packages will do it for you. Angel Kebirungi, a Law graduate, started this little business during her final year at campus with a goal of saving herself from ‘being broke’.
Here, she shares with Satisfashion UG her tips for starting and running a business tailored for the youth.
Tell us about yourself. Growing up, education, career.
My name is Angel Kebirungi. Growing up was an adventure, living in the highly technical Uganda. I lived in Masindi district in my formative years and moved to Kampala after.
I did my primary at Greenhill Academy, secondary at Mt St. Mary’s College, Namagunga and later pursued a Law degree at Makerere University. During my last year at campus, I thought to myself on how to keep my mind active and earn from it so that I do not completely depend on my parents. My go to first option was art since it is a talent of mine.
How did you start Sweet Tooth Packages?
I have a weakness for sweet things like chocolates and sweets. ‘Brokeness’ was another motivator. I wanted to make some money. I am not the only person that loves chocolates, so with ‘Sweet Tooth Packages’ I can find a way to package them and sell them off to fellow ‘sweet toothers’ and make a small profit off it. Just like that, sweet tooth packages was started.
What gave you the confidence to start?
God, and the support from my friends. When I shared the idea with my friends they bought it almost immediately.
Describe your regular day at work.
Based on the number of orders and the level of preparedness. I normally have to get in touch with the team that designs and makes the packages, I have to procure the chocolates and sweets and assemble the whole package ready for delivery. Other days include updating and running my social media accounts, as well as brainstorming on innovate ideas on how to improve the packaging and ingredients.
What do you love most about what you do?
The joy and happiness the product gives the client when I make a successful delivery. This is the most gratifying and rewarding part of the job.
What can you say was the turning point in your business?
My eureka moment was when I put the idea out and went ahead and made the packaging. I saw this idea come to life. I stopped planning and started doing.
What are some of the challenges faced by young entrepreneurs in Uganda?
Access to financing. This is crucial in growing any business. High costs of production. Lack of a well thought out plan. Some of the young entrepreneurs do not make business plans which can track the financial viability of the businesses they intend to start. This creates a lot of huddles in the future making success almost impossible.
