WhatsApp’s New and Highly Anticipated Voice Chat Room Function Set to Give ‘Twitter Spaces’ a Run for its Money

By  |

WhatsApp started out as a purely text-focused messaging platform, however, very soon the company added new features that revolutionized its service, such as voice calls and videos .

Later, the Meta app followed the lead of its competitors—specifically Telegram—by adding much-requested features like the popular Channels, a feature that would allow large group interactions via text. Now, the platform is looking to add support for voice chats.

About the function it was already known before that it was already in development, however, now we know more details about how it works, which means that its official launch is very close.

What are WhatsApp voice chats?

Voice Chats is a new WhatsApp feature that allows you to start voice chat rooms—similar to Twitter Spaces and Discord, where people can join or leave ongoing conversations at will.

According to WABetaInfo, voice chats are reaching more beta testers with version 2.23.16.19 (available now on the Play Store) giving us a more detailed look at the feature’s implementation.

The same portal pointed out that initially WhatsApp voice chats were available for groups with 32 participants or more (group calls allow up to 15 people at a time), but it could only admit that number of people in a voice chat at the same time. same time, which was a somewhat disappointing limitation.

However, people who are using the latest beta can start voice chats, and any member of eligible groups can join them.

How do WhatsApp voice chats work?

When a WhatsApp voice chat is in progress, the group icon changes in your chat list and you should see a banner with a wave icon and a Connect button, so you can participate in the discussion in real time.

When voice chats are active and WhatsApp isn’t being actively used, you’ll receive a silent notification instead of an incoming call ringtone seen in group calls.

WABetaInfo claims that once up and running, voice chats are end-to-end encrypted, as are all other interaction methods facilitated by WhatsApp (which apparently still takes security very seriously).

The leaked information also reveals that you can leave a voice chat at any time you want. If a voice chat remains empty for 60 minutes, WhatsApp will automatically close it. However, group members can always start another one if they wish.

How do WhatsApp voice chats work?

So far, Meta has not officially announced this feature, but the company is expected to do so soon so that voice chats join other useful tools that the company has recently announced for its messaging service, such as message editing, multi-device mode and spam call blocking.
