What To Wear To A Wedding As a Guest In 2023

Our guide to dressing for the occasion

Who doesn’t love a wedding? Wedding invitations are always exciting, but they can leave you feeling stressed if the wedding dress code is not clear, thankfully we’re here to take some of that stress off!

They’re the perfect opportunity to dress up, get your photo-shoot game on, and enjoy an evening of good food, great company, and fantastic entertainment. We can all agree that weddings are usually pretty formal affairs (unless you know someone who has eloped or had very a specific wedding theme!). Still, you don’t need to panic if the formal element initially makes you panic within!

If you are attending a wedding as a guest, that means you may need to abide by a dress code for that event. If you’re stressed about style, we’ve covered you with our handy guide. We’ve picked out some styles for the most common wedding guest dress codes so that you arrive dressed appropriately—and stylishly—for the celebration.

Black Tie

This is one of the most formal wedding dress codes and usually means the wedding is an evening event. Women should typically wear a formal floor-length gown.

The formality of a black-tie wedding usually denotes that everything you wear in your black-tie outfit should be pulled together and seamlessly polished, so it looks as though a great deal of thought and expense went into it; it’s not difficult to see why people usually hire a stylist for this kind of wedding event outfit!

However, a sophisticated cocktail dress can sometimes be worn to a Black Tie Wedding. For this option, there are many materials you can choose from to get that expensive black-tie look, such as satin, lace, and even velvet, depending on the season!

Sometimes a sophisticated cocktail dress can also be worn to a Black Tie Wedding. We would go for a bold dress like our Fuchsia Satin Strapless Mini Dress with Drape Detail to make a statement.

Formal or Black-Tie Optional

If you have received a wedding invitation with this dress code, this can sometimes be tricky to find appropriate guest wear. We would recommend going for something contemporary like a statement suit

Cocktail

This is a small step above semi-formal, and is a popular dress code choice for female wedding guests. A pink mini dress with volume sleeve and tulle hem is the perfect balance between elegant and comfortable for your evening look.

Or add something a little more daring to your wedding guest outfit, a black mini dress with contrast aqua feather trim and detachable sleeves is a playful piece to celebrate the happy couple.

Semi-Formal or Dressy Casual

We think this is one of the tougher dress codes as a female wedding guest, and mostly depends on the time of the wedding.

For a daytime wedding, you can wear lighter colours and prints such as florals.  For an evening wedding, we would suggest either a suit combo or a blazer dress. Blazer dresses are our favourite staple for female wedding guest outfits, as they are a formal statement piece whilst also showing some leg – so you have an excuse to buy a killer pair of heels.

Tropical or Destination

For a resort based wedding, we would also suggest a co-ord for your wedding guest outfit, an effortlessly chic outfit that can be thrown on, making getting ready easier and giving you more time for hair, makeup.

We hope this guide has helped you decipher the dress code on your wedding invitation, and we just know that you’re going to be the best dressed wedding guest!
