Viola Davis Wears Trench Backwards on New Vanity Fair Cover!
Viola Davis stars on the July/August cover of Vanity Fair magazine. The American actress and producer, who is considered one of the most influential people in the world according to Time Magazine, wears a taffeta MaxMara trench dress worn backwards. According to Dario Calmese, the photographer of this iconic image, the idea was for her to wear the trench backwards so that it could be unbuttoned to reveal her back. “Even the deep blue color of the garment feels symbolic; indigo cloth was used as currency in the slave trade,” Calmese told the New York Times.
Ms. Davis’ style choice isn’t the only unconventional situation going on with the cover. Dario Calmese is the first black photographer to shoot a Vanity Fair cover. In the accompanying story, Ms. Davis talks about how her entire life has been a protest.
“When I was younger, I did not exert my voice, because I did not feel worthy of having a voice,” she says.
