You might have eaten every kind of bread there is, or porridged yourself to boredom. If you’re like some of us, this lockdown time is starting to get a bit boring, especially in the kitchen. Worry no more, Crystal Newman to the rescue! A couple of days ago she posted this recipe for homemade donuts that’s worth a try in case you’d like to switch it up.
“I found this recipe online and tweaked it a little bit here and there,” she added, before dropping the recipe.
Ingredients:
- 500g all purpose flour
- 250ml whole milk
- 60g melted margarine/butter
- 10g instant yeast
- 2 egg yolks
- 5 tablespoons caster sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
- Lemon zest (1 lemon)
- Sunflower oil for frying
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 teaspoon rum (optional)
Directions:
- Warm the milk and mix in the sugar till fully dissolved. Then add the yeast while it’s still warm.
- Sift your flour in to a bowl and add the salt.
- In a separate bowl, mix the egg yolks with the vanilla essence and rum (optional). Then add the warm (not hot!) melted margarine/butter and mix together.
- Next, add the milk to your wet ingredients and whisk well.
- Slowly fold in the flour and mix together until you have a smooth dough.
- Leave in the bowl and cover with a kitchen towel for 45 minutes in a warm area.
- Place your risen dough on a floured surface and roll out to about an inch in thickness. Cut out circular shapes and stick your finger gently in the center of each one.
- Cover the shapes with a kitchen towel for another 15 minutes.
- Fry in oil that is not too hot starting with the side pressed in and cover. Turn over after 1-2 minutes and fry the other side uncovered till golden brown.
- Place on a tray with paper towels to drain the excess oil and sprinkle with icing sugar.
