Three Ugandan Design Brands Doing Things Differently and Changing The Game in the Process

By  |

We can now comfortably say that the fashion industry is growing very fast and swiftly sieving stylists, design collectors, fashionistas, tailors and boutique owners from actual design creatives. As the industry gets flooded with old and fresh talented amazing models, symmetrically we see exceptionally creative and promising designers.

Let’s agree, these three designers are doing things differently and ultimately changing the game.

Eguana Kampala

Eguana Kampala is an indigenous fashion brand with an offering of both bespoke and ready to wear. It was born in 2007 by the awesomely multi-talented Emmanuel Bagwana. The brand has dominated the fashion scene these past few years. You will agree with me that it has had a good share of media attention by local and international fashion enthusiasts.

This is all thanks to the brand’s creative director who is always shooting campaigns and look books in collaboration with local creatives. Their 2018 ‘Intensity collection’ has been showcased at countless fashion events, and featured in a number of photo shoots. I’m not a fan of brands showcasing the same collection over and over again but in this growing industry, every press opportunity has to be utilized.

In the end, Bagwana has discovered and worked with some of the top models right now such as Aketch Joy, Paul Mwesigwa, Anyola Susan and more.

Wondering how you can get a hold of Eguana Kampala, I got you, just check them out at Bold at Acacia Mall or on Instagram @eguanakampala

Beryl Couture is a luxury design label which was birthed in 2011. Anita Beryl, the designer behind the brand is an award-winning creative with a unique spec of design and aesthetic. She got most of her mentor ship and skills from France at the prestigious French Fashion University, ESMOD where she decided to focus on Haute couture. I must say the decision wasn’t in vain or wrong because you will agree with me that it has placed her in a unique place in the industry.

I clearly see a fashion legend and probably the first Ugandan to showcase at the highly admired Fashion weeks around the world like New York Fashion week, Milan Fashion week and many more.

Her unique taste and craftsmanship has been tapped by many celebrities and fashion lovers. We have seen the likes of Flavia Tumusiime, Anne Kansiime, Malaika Nyanzi, Barbie Kyagulanyi and more adorned in her breathtaking designs.

Anita Fabiola recently walked the red carpet during Cannes Film Festival in France in a dazzling light purple chiffon dress by the designer.

Her latest offering is a bridal collection presented during the Bride and Groom Expo 2018 where she received a standing ovation, something that rarely happens at the event.

K-Rafael by Kasule Allan Raphael

Kasule is one of the most talented designers in Uganda, but he’s so press shy, you might never realize it until you see his work.  In 2016, he designed the costume that was worn by Uganda Olympics team going on be named one of the most stylish teams at the sports event.
