The Undercover Brothers were sent home last Saturday after a short stint in the Tusker Project Fame 6 academy. The reality of eviction finally sank in and it’s sad that it’s our boys that had to be knifed first. We had a chat with them duo on music, fashion and the future of the group.
I’m very excited to meet you. Its sad that you left so early. How have you taken this in?
It was so sad on our part too. However we are still so grateful that we were among the few very talented Ugandans who represented this season. Thousands turned up for auditions you remember. For such a show one or two contestants will be leaving the academy each weekend so it is just the beginning.
How long have you guys been singing together?
We’ve been doing this together for five months.
How much experience did you have before going for the show then?
We didn’t have that much experience. That is why it’s still an honor that we were on it. Just five months together before the show.
Didn’t you feel intimidated by the rest of the contestants? There’s a lot of experience and talent in the academy.
It’s true that many of our mates were very talented but that didn’t beat us. All of us had something different to bring to the table. There’s that unique power we brought to the team mostly on those group numbers. We still used that opportunity to learn as much as possible. Uganda doesn’t take music seriously as much as Kenya does so it was an honor.
What is the way forward for you? Are you still going to keep this thing going one?
This is just the beginning of a musical journey. We are coming real hard on the East African music scene I must stress that. We weren’t in the academy for long but we learnt a lot. We are ready to put all that to good use and give East Africa a new sound. We’ve been working so hard even before the show so this is just the beginning.
What is your style of music?
We do a blend of Rn’B, soul, soft rock and traditional rythm. It’s a sound that will appeal to young people.
Have you been approached by any talent management companies yet? Were you under management before?
It’s still too early. We haven’t yet gotten that but we hope to. We have been pushing on our own before. We are still ready to manage on our own in case no one comes on board. Trust me we’ve come from far and are ready for this.
If given chance to go back to the academy. What would do that you feel you failed to do while in?
Interesting! First of all there’s no such thing. When you leave the academy, you cannot go back. Even if it was to happen, we are now past that level of competition. We are ready for the real competition. It there was anything we failed to do there – it has to be showing East Africa what we had to offer. There is no turning back now though.
Why did you choose the name Undercover Brothers? People on social media feel that you cannot be stars who are undercover.
Interesting! How we got the name is a very long story. I cannot say it will change in the future but who knows. Just watch the space.

Enough of the serious questions. Mulungi you were so close to Jennifer while in the academy. Is there a possibility of you two getting serious?
That girl was so sweet to me. I miss her a lot. I can’t tell you now. I want to keep her as a friend though.
Kirya you were all over the place, is there anyone you probably had a crush on?
I was there for music and nothing else. I made so many friends but nothing serious.
About fashion, Mulungi what was with the extensive collection of caps? Was it a a strategy?
It wasn’t a strategy. I love snap backs. I’m always confident in them. Everyone close to me knows that. The other thing is I know i look good in them. I had to be comfortable in there.
How many did you carry for the show?
I had carried like 10. I played with those few. I had worn all of them by the time we left though.
Describe your personal style.
Mulungi: I’m more comfortable in casual clothes. I love them fitting. I wear my caps and keep it simple.
Kirya: I’m very formal. I love my chinos with matching blazers and simple shoes.
Did you get a Kenyan accent? You speak like Kenyans. Are you faking an accent?
I can’t tell if I’m using a Kenyan accent. We’ve been interacting with so many Kenyans. I guess that’s why.
Whom do you think is going to win this competition?
Mulungi: Kojjo
Kirya: Daisy
